How to unlock test menu!

I just discovered this interesting tidbit in the MINI Wiring Diagram System under the "Instrument Cluster" section. Note the last sentence:
"Test functions of the instrument cluster

The test functions are displayed in the LC display of the instrument cluster.

The test functions are used in service to check the coding. The test functions are also an aid to troubleshooting without the BMW diagnosis system.

Starting the test functions
  • Terminal R On or terminal 15 On
  • Hold down the reset button in the instrument cluster for 10 seconds
The test functions can also be started in this way: pressing the reset button and simultaneously switching on terminal R.

Locking and unlocking the test functions (test function 19)
Only the first two test functions are freely accessible. As of the 3rd test function, all other test functions are locked. Unlocking is only possible using test function 19. The test functions are unlocked by entering the total of the vehicle identification number."

Not exactly sure what they mean by the "total of..." - presumably it is the numerical summation of your VIN digits (probably just the last 5).

NOTE: I have not tried this myself yet and I assume no liability if you manage to unlock your's and brick your car's computer!

First off thank you TheBigNewt for that discovery and starting this thread

I printed the single post instructions on how to access the information and tried it on Scrappy yesterday and it worked great.

The important information-
Production Date: 2/27/08
S/W Version: 78.52.00

The rest of the information culled from the test I really didn't have much need for personally.

The only thing is that by pressing the odo reset button during the test/information procedure sets it back to 0.But I always log the current mileage on all of my gas receipts so I can calculate my MPG per fill up.

This was just a generic BMW OBC code mapping?

Does anybody have any insight into the degree of symmetry of the MINI tank. Just playing with the example produced some interesting non-linear draw down curves.

I just held the button in as I said in the first post. I was trying to reset the trip meter to zero.

I think that's the date the car was built in Oxford.

it's a green and white computer printout that lists yr car's birth (build) date, that's all. It should stay with the car throughout the entire build/ship/delivery process.

Yep, I got that with my car as well. In watching a DVD tour of the factory you can see that sheet stays with the car from around the time of paint.

Aside from the "gee whiz" factor, what practical value does accessing these computer hidden menus provide? Are there any settings that can be altered? If so, why would they be altered? Everyone seems excited by this discovery, but what use is it?

Whoa! That DVD is mad expensive! Does anyone have this already? That could be an excuse for a future mini and a movie meet.

As you can see in the thread I bought two and they were only $23. I looked at the site again it doesn't look like they are going for that cheap anymore. The rest were the same price as the are now, way too expensive. They did help me get through the 109 day wait I had on my ordered car.

How to unlock 19.xx

There are of course programmable menus there and the trick must be getting 19.xx to read "unlock" rather than the default "lock", as you say R56mini.

This is where we need some help from R50/R53 guys that played around with the CPU settings!
To UNLOCK 19.XX, USE THE LAST FIVE DIGITS OF YOUR VIN ie. 12345, add each digit 1+2+3+4+5 =15 Enter the sum 15 under the 19.xx and scroll through the menu, its unlocked. BTW: 07__ Will show the coolant temp.
