R56 Short Antenna?
Unfortunately for the sellers of short antennas, physics actually does work, and you will not get as good reception as with a correctly-sized antenna.
The OEM mini antenna is a specific length to optimize reception of the FM band. Exactly twice as long would be better.
Now this may not matter and fashion may rule for you, particularly if you don't listen to FM much, but these 4" antennas simply do not work as well as the OEM.
If you are in a high-signal area, like a major city, the difference in performance will not result in better sound - it's the fringe areas where reflected signal interference (multipath) or weak signals in distant areas where the difference will become apparent.
The test mentioned by ScottRiqui, to sit in one location and count the FM stations that Scan picks up with the stubby vs. stock, is a good indicator of antenna performance.
So don't kid yourself - looks aside, stubbies don't work as well as the standard antenna. Period. However, the difference may well be irrelevant to you...
I replaced the OEM on my car, as reception does matter to me, and I was getting a lot more static on FM in the marginal area where I live.

I've had the 4" Alta antenna for about a month, and though I love the looks, I put the OEM one back due to a station that kept giving me static. I'm embarrassed to tell you what station it is.
Otherwise, the Alta antenna was good enough for all the other stations I listened to.

If you want a really good looking 4" antenna, go here:
http://www.islandminispeed.com/servlet/Detail?no=80
$19.99 + 5.95 S/H = $25.94
Fits perfectly. Looks very nice compared to the other 'cheaper' ones. I have experienced no loss of reception. If anything, my reception is better compared to the rubber OEM antenna with a piece of wire wrapped around it. Works great! Trust me. I am very picky. You won't be dissappointed.
