Scoop is not the same color.

Anyone notice that the paint on the scoop doesn't exactly match the paint on the body?

Here I've increased the saturation of the image to make it easier to see the color difference:

So, what to do? Live with it? Complain? Take it out and paint it another color? Spend $300 on a carbon fiber scoop?

My CR does not seem to have this prob. I would definitely complain about it. It shouldn't be hard at all for the dealer to repaint w/ the right color. IMHO

dwdyer 05-22-2007 03:23 PM

I think what you are probably seeing is the same paint on a different substrate. The scoop is black plastic, the hood is metal, probably with a light-colored primer.

Honestly, I'm not seeing it myself though. My monitor at home is calibrated though I might see more of a difference there.

complain dude...if your not happy then down the line when you try to sell teh car it may be an issue
if they can't fix it then maybe they can throw something in for the problems later?? heh heh

MINI Jackpot 05-22-2007 04:33 PM

Looks like you'll need a repaint on that body to match the scoop...

lava 05-22-2007 04:37 PM

It definitely does not match, but ummm... I kind of like it!

thlaxx 05-22-2007 04:40 PM

mine matches PERFECTLY?!?1

jymontoya 05-22-2007 05:03 PM

I think it looks kind of neat like that. Well, atleast it would if the scoop were functional.

Better idea, find someone with a std. cooper and swap. Is this possible? has it yet been discussed?

AstroCoop 05-22-2007 05:32 PM

I would complain also, what would it hurt? It'll be something that bugs you everyday that you notice if you don't.

+1

Robin Casady 05-22-2007 06:29 PM

The dealer is 87 miles away. I guess I'll complain next time I have a reason to take it in.

MINIclo 05-22-2007 06:35 PM

I'd definitely ask about the color difference, and then consider getting the CF scoop.

4xAAA 05-22-2007 06:49 PM

I would rant.

thlaxx 05-22-2007 07:57 PM

loook, see, the same! haha [atleast for me]

U.S. consumer protection laws require that non-functional elements be painted a different color than functional elements so that they can be readily identified before purchase.

z3bum 05-22-2007 08:36 PM

My scoop seems to match. You can get the carbon fibre one from Morristown MINI for $239.20, $116 for each mirror cap...

My scoop is functional, so they got it wrong.

If you would like a carbon fiber scoop, maybe suggest to the dealer that you would take that for a sooper dooper deal or they can choose to have the current one replaced.

My guess is this is a color lot matching issue. Silver is very hard to match and I'm guessing the scoops are long done and lined up waiting for the cars during assembly. Anyone know for sure?

In my industry (product design), I avoid matching same colors for different materials of molded plastics (non-painted parts) because they will never match exactly. In fact, different raw material lots of the same material will vary as well. Painted parts will have the same issue lot to lot. My theory is: parts that mate that are different materials should be different colors; different enough so that it doesn't look like a mismatch. That doesn't apply here since these are painted parts, but unfortunately, the result is the same.

Good luck! :)

Robin, I agree it's definately off and to my eye, not in a good way. I'd give your MA a headsup that there's a defect in your car. At least it'll be in your file for when you show up for service.

Mine matches perfectly. I would complain. I'd tell the dealer, either make it match or replace it with the CF at no charge.

snkbte 05-23-2007 03:59 PM

I would not be happy with the color match Either. Go back to the dealer and show then the difference. I'm sure they can do a better job matching the paint. Should not a big deal. Just a matter of removing the scoop, a quick sanding and paint. Should not take any more then one day at the dealership to do it. Good luck.

Robin Casady 05-23-2007 04:27 PM

Thanks for all the encouragement. When I am confident that MINI of Mountian View techs have mastered the software update for Voce Activation, I'll have them do that upgrade and fix the scoop color.

ltjpunk7 05-23-2007 05:43 PM

my PW scoop doesn't match perfectly either...i noticed it the other day after a wash...i stood back and kept changing positions until i was just like...****!

hermanator 05-23-2007 06:25 PM

The color mis-match you show is not acceptable... I'm sure Mini will make it right after they see it. Mini will probably order a replacement then do an exchange/install.
