oil filter cap

My son tried to impress me and change his oil himself. Now I need to fix it, lol. Ok, guys I ordered another oil filter cap and I'm ready to install it, but it's not as easy to get to as I thought it would be. I was trying to get an oil filter wrench around it to twist it off since he destroyed the socket head on the cap. I can't get in there to get any leverage, any ideas of how I'm going to get this off? I thought about drilling a hole through it vertically as a last resort and attempting to break it loose, but that my just break it into peices.

might be able to get a grip with a strap wrench

better yet an 'oil filter strap wrench' where you could use a socket extension to work from the normal angle / top

I had an idea last night I may try today. Epoxy the socket to the striped cap and see what happens.

Some bent angle channel lock/water pump pliers https://www.ecstuning.com/b-knipex-p...nt8701250~knp/

or the strap might do it.

I wish is was that easy. I bought these from you hoping it would work, but it’s a no go.

Ah man, Not wide enough or just too tight to get in there? I was thinking to get the pliers on whats left on the hex end and twist. Once you get it loose you should be able to spin it off by hand.

I can clamp on it with the jaws at 90 degrees, but no room to twist. Definitely no leverage at 90. I bought the new cap and the stubby socket from you guys too. I’m really thinking some aero epoxy I have and the socket may be my best option at this point without destroying the cap.

Ok, thanks for the order, those jaws are good that you have for other cars that have spin ons and/or tractors and equipment. Yep, that might do it.

Getting that socket on all the way and using an extension at the correct angle will ensure you dont damage the cap in the future. I guess a good way for your son to learn the proper way.

Search for Reverse Threaded socket.. They make them for lugnuts that are stripped.. Might be able to find one in the right size...

I think what you mean is an extractor socket and I was about to mention this ... it is what I've used to get off rounded GEN1 oil drain plugs (a common problem)

but you may have to search a bit to find a socket size large enuf ... the cap is 27mm isn't it?

This set and most I've seen max out at 3/4 inch - 19mm

here's a set that goes up to 27mm
Amazon Amazon

***************************************

you could get ugly, drill and if it breaks well so long as you don't loose any pieces INTO the engine what's the loss? You have a new cap!

You could cut the top off and remove the element then 'destroy' the rest of the can ..... it's plastic so should break long before the metal it screws to.

Just to let you know, I did get it off. The aero epoxy worked, so now my son's cap permanently has a socket attached to it.
