She drowned but recovery on the way - R55 Edition

After recovering this baby [[url]https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/r57-cabrio-talk-2009/320889-she-drowned-but-recovery-on-the-way.html ], I got this poor clubman out of the swamps. I couldn't resist not getting it. it got some nice options non of my previous clubmans had. It arrived today after a long week of waiting...The fun shall begin ;)

After quick examination, I think this one comes with a pearl lol

The engine seemed to have been replaced recently. looking through the oil cap, the head still shines, the vacuum pump looks brand new, and the turbo oil feel line is still shiny. took the spark plugs out and no water is inside the cylinders. I will check the timing chain to see if it is the new edition and the air filter just in case, I'll leave the plugs out and hand spin it first.

Few of the modules had some damage...FRM, JBE, MULF2, YAW sensor, and heated seats modules. I might also just replace the airbag module. I didnt check the TCM and the shifter but we'll find out once we get it started.

the car came without keys, so i bought virgin keys and will try to mate them with the CAS once they arrive.

stay tuned ;)

Not having a key, makes things a little slow...In the meantime, I took the ECU/CAS/keyfob from an 09 MCS with a manual transmission I have. I used a fuse box I was using on the 08 N18 swap and I used an FRM that was from another car..lol with weak batteries and a dying jumper box, I got the car to crank only! I read the codes and one stood out was the fuel pump activation fault. I didnt hear the pump priming or turning so I will try to test it after I use the right fuse box which i got today.
I wish I can find the original owner and ask him/her to send me the keys  there was no trace of documents inside the car.

After installing the right JBE, it started just fine. I was able to drive the car few feet back and forth. I let it run for some time and didnt notice anything abnormal. the CEL was on, of course, so I have to pull the codes and see what else the car is trying to tell me.
Because I need a key for this car, I figured I invest in a key programmer. I already have R270 to read the CAS eeprom. so i went ahead and got tango key programmer and virgin keys to mate. The blade can be cut fairly cheap and I can use the tools for the next project or if someone needs to add another key to their mini ;)

stay tuned for more :)

I like that clubby, did it get a fresh water bath or a salt water one? I always like working through a problem only to find a simple and cheap fix.

MiniToBe 11-15-2018 08:10 AM

it doesnt have a strong odor. I believe it's fresh water bath. looking at the FRM module, the water seemed to reach 2/3 of it. so it wasnt that high...This would make my 5th flooded mini. but this the 1st that came without a key.

MiniToBe 11-17-2018 04:07 AM

I got some time last night to clear codes and calibrate some modules...I let it purr for more than half hour :)

Today is exceptional lol...I finally was able to get a keyfob programmed to the car. The days leading to today were restless. Here are few thousand words worth of pix

You are either extremely knowledgeable and competent or enjoy troubleshooting a submerged vehicle. MIni's are known for there electrical gremlins adding water fresh or salt will be interesting to see the outcome long term.

I can humbly say that I know my way around and trust me, I used a ton of shovels digging my way around and still no where near where I want to be lol...Since this isnt the first flooded Mini nor the last, all of the previous ones turned out just fine. The longest time span was three years for my first one. I sold it a while back and the owner never called me about anything. The most recent ones are still ok; one of which my wife has been driving for months now and the other was sold early this summer. I'm still in touch with the owner and he's also looking to get another flooded R52 from me.

Do you mind elaborating on the key coding?
I work mainly on minis, rebuilding n14s after chain failures, and even going as far as swapping a manual n14 out for an automatic n16. One of the main issues I have is providing spare keys for my customers.

MiniToBe 12-11-2018 07:35 PM

In a nutshell, you need the following:
1- R270 CAS reader. Extract the EEPROM
2- K-Tag ECU reader (if you have no keys, this is a must). Extract the Maps file
3- Tango key programmer. Use 1 and 2 or 1 and a matched key from the car to make a spare.
4- blank keyfob....NOT used.

The details/how to are found in youtube.

Yhe issue i have is with keyfob configuration. For instance, my lock button opens the trunk. The trunk button opens/closes the car. I have comfort access, the keyfob does not seem to activate the function.

Cool, I like seeing the early MINI Nav display fro 2007-2011, so different than my 2011+ in the way the icons are. Glad is coming back to life.

funny you mentioned that because I'm in the process of converting that into 2011+ look. I dont like the two stacked radios. coding the navi will be the next challenge.

What is the software your using in photos ? Also what is FRM module ? Any advice on where to start for a flood car ?

ECSTuning 12-12-2018 10:00 AM

Yea the 2011+ function and display is better based on what I like. Then of course it has the black trim which i perfer. The downside is a couple years ago MINI updated the display and removed the cool stuff like

Im using ISTAD, ISTAP, INPA, NCS Expert, and WinFkp.

FRM is the footwell module or Body module that controls the lights and windows.

if you have a flood car, start with knowing how high the water got. Then most likely, the modules submerged will need replacement. Fuse box is usually the door to everything in the car.

hamptup 05-09-2019 09:50 PM

Any updates on the outcome of this build?

MiniToBe 05-10-2019 01:49 AM

Sure, the car is done. Everything has been installed, programmed amd coded. The only thing I'm doing right now is trying to program different keys to it. The first time i did it, the close and trunk functions were flipped...lol. I used another program to make it right, but instead lost connection to the key. I tried another one and some how the functions were spot on but it wouldn't start the car..lol i don't know how to configure the keys so it is a lot of trial and error.
I know i cam buy a key fob for 225 but I'm not ready to give up just yet.

My 08 clubby has comfort access, where can a key fob be bought for 225?

you being in Canada, I'm not sure how they would do it. but here is the link https://minipartsmass.com/parts/2011...nt=TRANSMITTER

Thanks much appreciated. It gives me somewhere to start. I imagine I will need to take that fob to the dealer to be programmed?

It will be plug and play. They will only need to unlock the comfort feature. From my research, the CAS is only able to store 2 keys with CA option. So, once you order a new one, the dealer will have to turn off the "lost key" and somehow enable the new one.

I have yet to get it fully programmed on my own!
