Stock Problems/Issues Discussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).

Any thoughts on what else might be causing this?

UUUUUUUUGH.

Was on the bypass when the Clubby stumbled for a moment on acceleration (halfway between shifts) and started blowing white smoke out the exhaust. No unusual noise when it happened, no lights on the dash, and it continued to operate normally other than the smoke. "Great," I thought, "oil in the combustion chambers."

When I stopped at a light, I noticed the car struggling a bit to accelerate and backfiring quite a bit more than usual.

So I stopped and had 'er hooked up to a diagnostic machine. "Fuel flow cut due to super knock" on every piston, and a code 12350 that was missing information.

Now, I've heard that the super knock issue can be caused by a bad timing chain, so I'm gonna go with that unless someone has additional info. And I'll guess that bad timing chain is probably what helped create my blow-by problem?

I reiterate: UUUUUUUUUUUUGH.

year and mileage?

you can check the timing. you can also check for misfire in coils or spark plugs. can you get fuel pressure reading?

2010 S Clubman with about 70200 miles on it. If the timing wasn't off before this happened, it is now - doing the death rattle thing. Not sure about a the fuel pressure, but it's definitely misfiring. Took it to a mechanic and he said I've definitely blown a ring or two.

Nobody in town will rebuild this engine because they can't offer the warranty I'd get with a reman.

Crap.

I've done a handful of rebuilds for this engine. It isn't bad of a job. I just did two in the last month and waiting for a fellow NAM member to bring me his for timing chain service.

Where are you located?

Just curious, was the engine losing/using oil before the mishap?

I think you may want to either take it to another mechanic, or have the current one spend some time diagnosing it. some of the things you need to see/know:

1-does the engine spin by hand?
2-compression values?
3-once the valve cover is off, the condition of the timing chain?
4-is the timing set or has it moved?
5-can you feel the rocker arm moving freely (no pressure from the cam lobes)

these are the basics to decide what to do next. Can you have your mechanic answer these questions?

mustangcruise, nope. No leaks, and oil level hadn't changed much (if at all) since the last oil change.

MiniToBe, I'm taking the car in to get looked at over the weekend, will definitely run these questions by the mechanic.
