R55 CEL issues....angry and upset now
CEL issues....angry and upset now
My 2011 R55 S was the middle of the sandwich of an accident in November. It was repaired pretty satisfactorily. It should have not been repaired because at the end of the day there was over $10k in damage to a car worth $12k at the time. Anyway, that's just a backstory.
The Sunday before MOTD, I was going North US 276 toward the Blue Ridge Parkway. I got a half engine light but still had full power. After leaving an overlook where we took a stroll, the light went off. It came back on several miles down south on the BRP. It went off after dinner and did not come back on the entire week at MOTD. Fast forward to this past weekend. Going South US276 toward BRP and it comes back on. This time it went off after each stop and start but came back on each time until we were down low and it had not come back on. Certainly my MINI doesn't hate the BRP and twisty mountain roads!
I took it by the dealer to get an oil change and diagnosis. I knew it was a super knock and something else but wasn't sure the something else. They said it was a 002C57 Charging pressure control, plausibility along with super knock codes. They also said the wastegate is not closing fully. While doing this they blew out the FRM and had to replace it. Along with that was a note of "volume control solenoid starting to seep". What in the heck is that?
So now that they replaced the FRM, my trip odometer is not next to the mileage anymore. It is hidden in the menu. The CEL on the speedo is on when it was not on before. In fact, that CEL never came on during any of these times. The half engine light came on again. Would the CEL have been caused by the FRM replacement?
I have been thinking of replacing this car just because it doesn't feel right after the accident. The suspension feels shot. Now this engine issue. It has almost 98k miles and every one after the first 12 have been fun. I can't trade it in due to the CarFax. I can sell it but now with the CEL on, that idea might be out. I doubt Carmax will do a deal. I don't like the price of the F54. All the ones I like are >$36k which I don't want the payment for. I feel completely screwed by this insurance estimator who should have totaled the car in the first place, hence the anger.
Any thoughts on all this? Worth fixing, worth trading? Will it be a full turbo or just parts? I'm having my usual mechanic look at it to see but I am just angry as hell right now. Angrier than I have been since I realized they should have totaled it.

Abbreviated version:
Would replacing a FRM get rid of the trip odometer to the right of the odometer?
Would replacing that part cause a CEL that has not been lit previously?
What does volume control solenoid starting to seep mean?
What is the prognosis for wastegate not fully closing?
What does error code 002C57 convert to so I can Google it?

The FRM (Footwell Module) has to be coded specifically to your car to match the options and features and communicate with the other modules. It would be possible when coding that the trip odometer was coded to not display.
If the coding was not the same code version for your car it could create fault codes that can only be read by a MINI specific code reader. Have you checked for any faults since the FRM was replaced? I had to replace the FRM in my recent 328 and they never could get the coding 100%. I kept getting codes for driver mirror and sunroof rain sensor and finally gave up and put black tape ofver the light inside the speedometer.
Volume control solenoid - Oil Pump Solenoid. When they leak oil it it leaks onto the engine ECU and destroys it if not replaced in a timely manner. Here is one Click Here
If wastegate is not closing it is probably damaged and the turbo will need to be replaced.
I have searched many a night for a conversion for the MINI format codes with no success. Have you tried the check control method by holding the stalk button in when the cel display until it gives you a CC-ID code. Mine threw a CC-ID 029 today, but I haven't felt like diving into the diagnosis tonight.

Well, a little update. I forgot my garage door opener in the loaner so I had to go back by the dealer. I was like "I came in for an oil change and for you to read the error, not to obtain a CEL." They looked at it and I forget which harness but one of them was not connected fully and therefore causing the CEL. That part is solved.
Thanks for the link to the solenoid. I'll look into that.
Now for the good one. So the car has like no boost and feels very sluggish, but will get up to speed. I took it by the local MINI specialist. Why I went to the dealer and not him is one of those weird thought decisions that won't happen again. He found a vacuum line not connected. He hooked it back up and wham, I have boost.
I do have a wastegate question though. If the N18 turbos are one piece and have to be replaced that way, why would this part be available to buy?
Obviously that does not discount that this error will come back and doesn't solve the other issues with the MINI. I am getting to the point that as soon as I am able to get the diminished value claim money that I will sell it and find a new one. Now if only the attorney would hurry up on that aspect.
