Key

When I put one of my keys into the ignition slot in my 2011 nothing happens. When I put the other key in the slot the usual happens - lights come on - radio comes on. Could the battery on the one key be bad. I see in the owners manual that they are rechargeable. Also can I replace it. Thanks for the input.

Pop open the back of the key and replace the battery. They last 1.5-2 yrs depend on usage.

My spare key unlocks but doesn't activate the ignition. Battery is not replaceable, but rechargeable (?). Is there a fix?

Correct, when you put the fob into the holder it is supposed to recharge it. Some good info in this thread here and as stated if the battery is left uncharged for a while it can kill it. Here is another really good thread with how to fix it.

I read those and am left with unanswered questions. Is there still enough battery left to resurrect if I leave it in the slot? Will it charge if I can't start the engine?
Taking it apart seems a little beyond my paygrade .

I'm not sure, I believe if there is power to it that it should activate a recharge, but you may need to have the vehicle on. There is no real way of telling if it'll be able to be resurrected until you test it out. I'd try and see what happens.

Key

I sent the key to Mini Key Hospital - got the email address somewhere in a previous post. The battery was replaced although the battery that was in the key still had a charge but I changed it anyway hoping that would solve the problem. It was certainly cheaper than a new key. Got the key back and same thing - it would open the doors but no response when I put it in the key slot. I took it to the Mini dealer and had to purchase a new key. When they tried to read from the old key there was no response so I am going to assume there was some problem with internal circuitry of the key and not the battery. A new key cost a small fortune but what are you going to do.
