2008 R55 Clubman - Radio & Battery

Hi,

I've got a 2008 Clubman, with all the options except Sat & backup ultrasonic (i.e. Bluetooth, comfort, fobs, radio, NAV, HD Radio, etc.)

This winter in Boston, it was cold and snow-ridden, and I didn't drive much. When I did, there would be the occasional "battery warning" and the clock would be "-:-" and the date would be 2 days ago. I'd reset the clock and all would be OK.

The radio would play but then sometimes not. Sometimes the radio turned on and off (like removing the antenna temporarily). It never reset all my radio settings. Bluetooth stopped working, but could be set to "pair" but no paring was detected by attaching devices.

I could see radio stations or presets, but maybe not hear them. Or, the radio would keep saying "loading data from the audio device". Sometimes the moving from one to the other preset seemed to be frozen.

Although the "start the car with mute and CD Eject" did work (that is, that procedure made a reset back to the splash screen and "Accept" screen. But that's it...it didn't work to reset the CCC or anything.

It seems I need the radio reset or something. Uncabling the battery (net then pos) overnight didn't help.

I'd hate to have to bring it in to the dealer and fork over major cash just to have them reset the thing.

Is there anything I can do? Maybe pull a fuse overnight or something?

Thanks,

Lary

Now that it's warmer I did get the battery replaced with an Interstate MTP48...battery works now (and yes, maybe the alternator's goofed up, we'll see...but no soap on getting Bluetooth or Radio to work.)

Convenience electronics can be very inconvenient on modern cars.

Maybe not related, but there is a "battery reset" that needs to be performed on some cars when the battery gets replaced. It resets the computer to tell it what a "good" battery is now and keeps track of the battery wear. As the battery ages or goes south, the system may throw errors or other electronic gremlins because it thinks your battery is about done. Sort of electronic self-preservation.

I had a similar issue on my recently purchased 2008 clubman. My clock would need to be reset every couple of days, and also the date. It would start up fine one day, then wouldn't start the others, periodically and very unpredictable. My battery was only about 2.5 years old. It would fire up when I got a jump start. I finally got fed up with it and took it to the dealer. It was indeed the battery. Here's the thing though, mini coopers need to have the batteries professionally installed and "registered", that way the mini will behave and not be riddled with these quirks. My old battery was never registered which caused the issues. It was $135 for the new battery installed. Hope this helps.

Several times the stereo on my 2009 Clubman has no audio for all sources: radio, CD, iPod. It behaves like it works, all buttons push and change like they should, there's just no sound no matter what I do. If I shut down and restart the engine then the stereo all works fine. And this problem started about a year after I got a dealer-installed OEM battery installed. I was having clock/trip meter resetting issues too, but the new battery resolved those issues. The issues are apparently unrelated. Oh, I have NAV and Hi-Fi too. Anyway, not exactly the same stereo problem you're experiencing but similar. I wish I knew what was causing mine.

Just thought of something. When I connect an 8GB iPod to the stereo with a USB cable it works good. But when I connect a 260GB iPod or 32GB microSD cards in USB adapters then the stereo gets really slow and I think it days loading data or something similar. Do you have anything plugged into your stereo's USB port?
