has anyone tried the new Crave dip stick. Thoughts? The Gen2 are now available and was wondering if it is worth the $

We just got them in stock today and they are awesome, I'll have them at MOTD for everyone.

+1  it's worth it to never have to worry about a broken dipstick. This one goes in and out like butter.
|
Have mine and LOVE IT. Fantastic. 100% worth the money.

It is very cool they steeped up to the plate to fix the poor Mini R56 dipstick issue. I can't wait to see one and test it.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago and I was truly impressed! It literally falls into place and the only push you have to make is to seal the o-ring fitted stopper in the top of the dipstick guide tube. This is how MINI should have made their OEM dipsticks from the beginning.

Looks good. So does the lowest groove = 1 qt low?

The measurements are identical to the OEM dipstick, just a different design. So yes, the lowest groove is equal to the lowest part of the OEM high / low section. I put both dipsticks next to each other to get an idea of measurements.
|
And no more having to shove it into the dipstick tube? I HATE that about the OEM one.
|
The R56 tip looks slightly different than that photo, but yes, it corresponds to the same measurement as the OEM. The main difference is that you can actually SEE the oil on it, clearly, and it doesn't get smears of oil from going through the channel. Also, it slides through the channel well, so it is not at risk of bending or breaking. It actually makes you *want* to check your oil.
|
After you insert the tip into the tube you can literally drop it all the way in. It's amazing!

I'm putting a video on YouTube now and will link to it in a few minutes.

This shows how easy it is. My car is an R56 Justa but it fits the same in all models. And yes, my oil is overfull by about half a quart, the dealer did it (again). |

Yes, really a nice solution. "Drops" right in, easier to read. I will admit to seeing it come in the mail, just a 2x6 inch box. "That's it?" Was coiled inside...I actually laughed, it's a *spring*, very flexible, floppy even. How's that supposed to work? It works...very well indeed! |
OceanMini2- yes, though this is the second time, with a different dealer... read somewhere that they are required to put 5 quarts in? Dumb, if you ask me... but I have a little ding for them to fix, so will have everything done at once...

What is the price tag on these for 2nd Gens?

thanks

Great to see this! Not so great that MINI included such a useless stock dipstick that we have to shell out $75 to get a decent one, but I've accepted the fact that many corners were cut on these cars.
Well, Craven just made another $75 -- and I'm looking forward to a finally having a good dipstick! |
Dip Stick
I have ordered one and currently awaiting the arrival, it is due on Friday May 4th. I just changed my oil after being out of warranty, and checking the oil on the factory dip stick is a JOKE!!
I can't wait for this to arrive. BTW I used the Top Sider Oil Extractor, and it worked GREAT !! No more risking striping the oil drain plug ( Also of owners complain about it being sooo tight they usually strip it before they get it off ) Had all of the tools and the correct shallow socket to fit the oil filter cap, though I did go an pruchase a 10" extension so I would have room with the socket handle to clear everything, Everything came out fine and the oil change is complete! Except for checking the oil level afterwords that took about 10 tries to get me satisfied with the oil level. Any how looking forward to Friday when I get my new dip stick. |
Craven Dip Stick Update
My dipstick came in and it works WONDERFULL !
It just glides into the hole, and it is true you do have to just press down to seat the top of the stick. Get this I checked my oil level 1 time, and got a good reading the first time. If any one is on the fence about buying one, just get it, you will be glad you did and the peace of mind KNOWING that your oil level is correct is worth it, at least for me it is.. |
