Switching from runflats to regular tires

Just thought that I would post this to save other people from a lot of phone calls and shoe leather that I just burned in finding out the facts on this issue.

I'm switching from my noisy, rough riding OE runflats to Continental Extreme Contact DWS's, but found that a 17 inch spare will not fit in my Clubman tirewell ..... only room for 15 inch wheels.

Going to go with a 12 volt compressor and tire plug kit to take care of this matter in case of a flat on the road because runflats are so expensive and I would still get the noise and rough ride that I now have.

Just a little info for the uninformed like I was.

FYI there is a lot of information here on this exact same subject. Just need to search for it.

If fact a some Toyota spares will fit in the spare tire slot and depending on which one you go with it may or may not fit over the Front Brakes on and S model.

The OEM spare will fit over the Justa front brakes but not the S and JCW. When changing a front flat you have to remove one from the rear and move it to the front and put the donut spare on the rear.

OEM spare tire, new styrafoam inserts and misc nuts and bolts from the dealer should cost you about $230.

Wheel size is the problem

When talking to Mini parts, the only wheel that they make to fit in that storage bin is a 15 inch wheel. I have 17 inch wheels on my Clubman S, and I do not want to be limping along with three 17 inch wheels and one 15 inch wheel while trying to find room in the back of the car for the flat 17 inch tire.

If a Mini owner has 15 inch wheels, there is no problem, but no good solution for we 17 inch wheel owners.

With 17 inch wheels, you either buy run flats again, or go to regular tires with a 12 volt compressor and a plug patch kit .... not an optimal solution, but I do not know of another answer.

+1. And then you don't have to worry about a blow out situation that leaves you stranded. (That's how I ended up getting rid of my runflats and adding an OEM spare to the well in the back.) Go for it.

The diameter of the spare wheel does not matter. The diameter of the tire matters. The MINI tire diameters are all within 24 to 24.6" no matter whether they are fitted to 15, 16, or 17" wheels.

Not sure what you did. Do you have 15 inch wheels on your Cooper S? If not, and you have 17 inch wheels, how do you plan on driving with 17 inch wheels on three hubs and your 15 inch wheel tire mounted where you had the blowout?

Need you to tell me what you did.

I know what you are saying, but my spare tire storage compartment is only 22 inches in diameter and my present tires are 24 inches in diameter.

Am I missing something here?

I can't help with your clubman storage compartment but others can (and have discussed it in other threads.) I have a 15" space saver spare below the rear of my Cooper. I am putting 16" wheels and 205/50 tires on. The diameter will be 24.1" vs 24.0" with the 176/65-15 tires.

See post number 10 in this thread

for a pictorial on storing a space saver spare in the Clubman S.

I gather what you have done is to put a 15 inch wheel with a low profile tire on it that will still fit in the 22 1/2 inch well as a spare. This will still be 1 1/2 inch less in diameter than your other three tires, but you can limp into town where you can get your regular 17 inch wheel and tire repaired to be back to normal.

Is this what you have done?
