Touring Cycle Holder vs. Fork-Mounted Bike Holder

I have a 2009 Clubman with Roof Rails. I'm now getting ready to get hardware to carry my mountain bike on the roof.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Mini Roof Rack Base Support System (#82 71 0 435 846) from my dealer and install them on my Roof Rails--they said it should be straightforward to install.

My question is with regards to the hardware for holding the bike:

OPTION#1---In my catalog I see a Touring Cycle Holder (#82 72 0 151 302). This holder holds the bike without needing to remove the front tire.

OPTION#2---Fork-mounted holder. I can't find this part on my dealer's accessory site, nor in my 2008 Accessory Catalog, but the parts person at the dealer said they had them in stock.

I've never owned a bicycle roof rack before. Any thoughts on which option would be better? They're about the same in price. So, I"m just wondering what would be easier to use, what would be better at preventing possible damage to the roof, which is quieter when driving, and what is more aerodynamic, etc.

Thanks in advance!

if you have the roof rails there is no need for the base support system as there are racks that have a crossbar mount that clamps right to the rail and is IMHO more secure in holing the bike and rack to the vehicle

I also prefer the fork mount bike trays

Yo Buzzcut,

Thanks for the quick reply and the photo. yeah, the Base Support System is basically the "cross pieces" which form a connection between the Roof Rails. So, I think I need to have these.

I just need to figure out the hardware to clamp onto these.

Why do you like the fork-mounted bike holder? The person at my dealer said they were more popular. Did you buy yours from MINI or from an after-market dealer?

Thanks.

I prefer the fork mounts. I have both and they feel more secure.

Yo JohnJohn,
Yeah, I think I'm leaning toward the fork-mount system. Sounds like its definitely a more solid connection (and less possibility of front wheel rattle you might get with the other Holder).

I'll just need to be careful to not ever scratch my roof up when I load/unload.

Thanks for the photos of your cool set up!

Does anyone have a model number (or link to webpage) for the fork-mounted holder from MINI?

not from Mini but the Thule 450 crossroad rail mount and 50" crossbar is what works well with 518 - Echelon fork lock bike tray

Cool BuzzCut,

I might just get the fork-mounted option they sell at MINI, but we'll see. I'm shopping the THULE website, too. Thanks for the info, and awesome Clubman!

That's what I'm using. I actually had the foot pack left over from my wife's old Honda Odyssey, and the bars and fork mount from my old 06MCS set-up.

On the Thule site you can't search for Clubman...it didn't work for me last time. Just look at the 450 Crossroad.

I like the Silver Thule "Aero" bars with my car, but the black square bars work just fine.

I would image the full Thule option is less expensive than the "Mini" badged system.

JohnJohn,
So they have the Clubman option on there now. So, for my set up:

2009 Mini Clubman w/ Factory Raised Rails with factory rack, Bike

This is what I went for on their site:
  1. ($240)BASE PRODUCT 450 Crossroad | LB50 Load Bars
  2. ($150)518 Echelon
They also mentioned these other accessories, but I'm not sure if I need them:So, this is looking about $545. I"m pretty sure the MINI option was fairly close to this. I'm going to need them to ship it to me, so we'll see what works.

For MTB and road racing bikes alike with quick release wheels, I'd recommend a fork mount bike holder also. The MINI holder is great, I've got it myself. Very clean look, it slots cleanly into the T-groove on the MINI crossbars and both holder-to-crossbars and bike-to-holder connections lock with one key.

One other upside about the fork mount holder, it won't void your bike warranty. Some bikes void the warrany if they are mounted in any kind of holder that grips the frame, like the Touring cycle holder.

Sincerely,
--Anders.

The number is 82720443635. You can find it on http://www.realoem.com.

I use the "touring bike holder" for two mountain bikes with no problem. Got from Morristown Mini for $105 apiece. They work really well, and seems real secure with no need to put wheel in vehicle. By the way, you may need to purchase a small step stool to place bike on top of vehicle depending on your personal height. I didn't discover this until the first road trip we took.OOps..

The MINI Roof Rack Base Support System is NOT for use with the Roof Rails. It is the item used by those of us who do not have the roof rails. IT connects into the roof of the car at each side just above the rain gutter. Just look at the picture, there are not roof rails on the car.

Obviously the dealer has no idea of what they are selling if they told you that this item would fit the roof rails.

EDIT: The part number you need for the croosbars for the roof rails is 82 71 0 435 867 and can be viewed here http://www.mini2.com/forum/mini-club...ml#post3601797

Hey Schnatzy,

Someone posted photos of MINI-branded Roof Rack Base on their roofrails here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/otra/se...7609631424061/) & on the thread here (https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/clubman-talk-2008/157932-new-roof-rack-base-support-for-vehicles-with-roof-rail-option.html).

The person at the dealer mentioned that the mounting for the Roof Rail will obviously be different since it won't be mounting to the roof, but will work (he mentioned never installing them himself, but that it should be easy).

Thanks for all the info ya'll!

YEs very true but what you posted in the first post of this thread is a completely differnet item and WILL NOT fit on the roof rails.

There are two type of mounting systems for items on the roof.

1. The MINI Roof Rack Base Support System - Can be used over roof rails but WILL NOT attach to them in any way, it is totaly imposible for these to attach to the roof rails. PArt Number 82 71 0 435 846. These will accept all of the attachments that MIN makes and most Thule attachments

2. The MINI Roof Rail System. The roof rails can only be installed by the Factory at this time. As for the cross bars they are call MINI Rack Cross Bars and Part Number is 82 71 0 435 867.

Now again if you look at the picture in the link you posted in the first thread for you will find there are no roof rails on that car in that picture. This item WILL NOT fit the Roof Rails.

The Dealer has not idea of what they are talking about. The Part Number 82 71 0 435 846 CAN NOT and WILL NOT fit the roof rails. You need part number 82 71 0 435 867. Please note the difference in the last three digits of the part number.

I just hate to see people get screwed by the dealers. I have been working the Roof Rack vs. Roof Rails since I got my car in April 08. I could not get Roof Rails as they did not exist yet and the original system fit the cooper but was fond my my self and others not to fit the clubman properly so MINI had to design new parts to make it work with the clubman.

I am even the one that rewrote the instruction for mounting the Roof Rack Base Support System. See this thread it is a sticky in the clubman forums. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-roofrack.html

Most if not all the dealer use this set of instructions as the ones with the Roof Rack Base Support System are totally useless as they are missing about half of the adjustments needed to make them fit the car.

I ended up calling my MINI dealer to confirm, and I am definitely getting the MINI Cross Rails (vs. the Base System). They'll be sent out tomorrow, and I might get them tomorrow! So, we'll see.

And here are some photos from my first ride.

Had a little bit of trouble attaching the "front" part of the Racing Cycle Holder to the Cross Bars. Took me a while to get the allen wrench to engage the bolt & loosen the tab (the thing which goes inside the Cross Bar). I thought it was broke. It was hard to see what was going on---you stick your allen wrench tool in there and then loosen it up---just took me a while to figure out how to loosen it up.

After that, it was pretty cake getting everything set up---Love it so far!

Hi all -

I'm looking to transport a mountain bike. Can anyone confirm that the fork-mounted holder (82720443635, here) WILL accommodate a mountain bike? The MINI parts guy at the dealer is telling me no! I don't want to go with the Touring Cycle Holder but he said that's the only rack that will accommodate a MTB.

THANKS for any help! Having trouble finding the answer to this question.

I have the fork-mount holder and my girlfriend has a MTB. The holder has no problems carrying the MTB.
