Ashtray/cupholder....what have you swapped it out with?

Hi all,

One thing that is a definitel NO NO in my household or vehicles is smoking. I have no issues with folks partaking but just not in my home or car.

With that being said, it appears as though the ashtray/cupholder on the left is solely for an ashtray.

Has anyone swapped this out with something more functional? Say another cupholder? Where did you get yours? Opinions?

Thanks again everyone!

Regards,

Mike

i believe the ashtray just sits in the cupholder. take the ashtray out, put it in a drawer in your house, and now you have 2 cupholders in the front.

best mod for the money!

Agreed, hardingsan - something I've opted for in all of mine.

Some people get those little inserts that will hold their cell phones, tightly, or various other things... I find that I like the two empty cup holders just fine.

I have a 1st gen. car, but my ashtray has always been a cash tray. It is a good place to keep change for parking. I also keep the cigarette lighter plug in there so it won't get lost - I usually have my Garmin GPS receiver plugged into the lighter socket.

I turned my ashtray into a mount for a GPS.

The best way to carry change in a cup holder is with one of these.

That's good for the US only. In Canada, we also have 1$ and 2$ in coins...

+1,

Put my ashtray in the third cup holder in between the seats in my clubman and use it to hold my gas receipts. Coins just go int he bottom of the cup holder as there is never enough change in them (i'm broke now that i have anew car) to affect the holding of a cup.

I left the ashtray in, it's filled with minty gum and gum wrappers. Cleaner than just leaving gum wrappers in the cupholder and when you open the ashtray it smells minty :D

The change container I have is the top half of a cheap walmart piece and it sits in the 3rd cupholder (made useless by the the armrest).

I haven't done anything with it yet. Still I'm pretty pissed because there is nowhere in my Clubman for my jar of beer.

I use it for my XM Radio mount. Belkin makes a "cupholder" mount that fits very nicely, and it also angles the screen so it's easy to see and use. The mount is tilt-adjustable, and height-adjustable. Cheap, and very easy to set up.

Moved it to between the seats for coinage (an abomination, btw...unless your in Vegas, o'course!). I use the driver side holder for my travel mug full of homeroasted coffee, and the passenger side for my Slacker G2 radio..short path to the input jack. (Beats SiriXM by miles).

Since we're talking about cupholders, can someone answer this: does the cupholder arm for the Garmin NUVI series actually work? It looks very flimsy to me and I can't help but wonder if the GPS is a bit too heavy and will cause it to fall out if I go over a speed bump. Does anyone here use the MINI-supplied version with the cupholder arm? How does it hold up over potholes and speed bumps?

i just use it for change, and a small "lense cleaner" type rag that i use to open / dust the secret compartment, as it it piano black and cannot stand fingerprints on it.

I use the right holder with the covered insert for change.

The left one securely holds my Cellcup which carries my radio for runs, my Razr cell phone, a pen (for tagging other Minis or writing notes) and a supply of toothpicks (perfect for removing bugs from radiators and intercoolers after a run) It's compact and stays in place even on the twisties.
