Passenger side suicide door malfunction

Hello fellow Clubbie owners, I have had Buckley for about 6 weeks, 2500 miles. Well I picked up my girls at school yesterday and the little suicide door would not open. I thought of everything short of dismantling the interior to try fixing the problem. Has anybody else had this happen to them? During the last week of August I had to take it back to Moritz Mini and have the both front doors adjusted. Water was leaking into the cab. Wondering if that could have anything to do with it. I take her in this Monday for the fix. Thanks for taking time to read the thread, Stephen.

Wow - water leaking in?! That's bad.

For the club door malfunction read this thread and see what you think: showthread.php?t=138667&highlight=cable the club door's cable apparently was an issue for a number of owners both here and abroad.

I don't have a clubbie, but a girl I worked with back east had the very same problem you described. She said it repaired itself somehow. I know that's not very helpful, but I thought I'd let you know that it does appear to be a potential problem! You're not alone. I'll let you know if I learn more.

Just a note to say that if you read that thread, I posted a link to, you'll see that sometimes the button just needs a little lubrication...while other times a replacement and repair is needed. It should not be a big deal if it does need to be replaced.

Thanks Otra and AvidMINI for your fast responses. I honestly tried the search feature and came up nothing. I guess I am the only one to call the passenger door as 'suicide'. Otra I tried opening the link you gave but it would not open. Thanks for all your help, Stephen.

Mine did it too. The next time I drove it the door worked fine. Haven't had a problem since.
BTW what side of fort worth are you in? I live near Azle & work on the west side of FW. Haven't seen you yet.

I live in N. Saginaw off of Business 287. Do not get to Azle much these days. I work in Southeast Tarrant. Other side of the world from where I live.

Thanks Otra, I did find your thread with your door issues. I do not have any Silicone lube to try that route presently. But I did notice that now the suicide door needs to be adjusted correctly. The suicide door is slightly out of alignment. Very hard to shut the door flush with the vehicle.

Ah, well then - I hope they fix up those alignment issues and that all will work fine from there on out.

I had this occur one time when I was back east. The door would not open using the door handle. Messed with the black plastic latch thingy on the bottom of the door, it opened and never had another problem after that. It almost acted like a child lock although I doubt it has one.

Uh oh, I went through the car wash yesterday and when the cycle was through, I opened the passenger side door and noticed soapy water on the door sill (the part that's covered in blue protective tape when you first get your car). Is this normal? Or does that indicate a leak or in complete seal somewhere???

I think this is normal. I believe the seal is between the sill and the interior.

Oops, I don't know how that comment got attributed to me - as it was Parkerton who actually wrote that....Oh I see, you quoted his post which somehow retained my name.... Well anyway, just wanted to make sure that the attributions were correct. We all know how in this day and age it's often necessary to refer to the FactCheck.org.

As Otra mentioned, this is a common Clubman issue. It's either a sticky Club Door interlock, easily fixed with a little silicone spray lube, or a broken or stuck cable, easily fixed by your dealer. I would try the lube DIY first, wiggle the little triangular plastic thingy at the bottom of the door jamb open and closed, and try to direct the spray in short bursts to the inner workings. Then open and close the door about 20 times to work it in. If it doesn't work, it's time for a trip to the dealer.

No water leaks yet but our suicide door failed too, would not open. Car had less then 2K miles. Dealer fixed it quickly. Gave us a Jetta to drive for the day (blech).

Yes... I noticed that when you wash the car...I wash mine in the do it yourself bay...and I noticed that water does get along that sill area...but nothing IN the car... I just attributed it to the high pressure wash and rinse of the "water gun"...

Drums, my suicide door wouldn't open this morning as I was showing it off to a Mini fan.

The black button near the bottom of the door didn't help.

Tomorrow I'll be calling on Mini of Dallas.

The post below, from OTRA, a sweetheart, is informative.

Well then, my 'food quality' silicone spray loosened up the little triangular nugget enough for me to pull it out the remaining 1/4 inch.
The door opens, but only after manually adjusting the black triangle.

Hello Mini Dealer...you have a problem.

I had to do the same thing. Frustrating. I have a 0800 appointment tomorrow with Moritz.

Having looked at mine....that's the same way that mine is acting. Pulling out the black triangle allows me to open the door....but it doesn't want to return by itself. Only when I open it by hand.

When I had mine serviced a couple weeks ago for the same problem, the SA said that it's so common it's happened on almost every single Clubman they've sold (including the one I checked in the showroom)! In my case, he said that the club door release cable had gotten loose so rather than repair, they just replaced it. My Clubbie was in for the "amber gear icon" issue anyway (discussed in detail in the "Problems" section) so they killed two birds with one stone. If the dealer's not handy, lube-ing it will work at least temporarily, but it sounds like they stretch easily so it's just another problem waiting to happen; might as well replace it, if convenient.

i had the club door problem on mine. all of a sudden it wouldn't open. i found that the black wedge shaped latch on the bottom of the door (which detects if the front door is closed or not) wasn't quite releasing all the way out. A little pry with the fingers to pry it open and the club door would open.

My BMW service centre did some research and found that there was a faulty batch of one of the parts that make up the interior workings of that latch. They replaced it and so far so good.

What's "food quality" silicone spray? A little on the door latch, a little in your coffee?
