I want a Clubman

I am really close to purchasing a new Clubman but I am starting to get a little concerned about messages I am seeing on some message boards in regards to engine noise at start up. The messages are saying that the car sounds like a tractor or a deisel when you start it after it's been sitting for a few days. I know things can get blown out of proportion on the internet. Anyone here having this problem? Should I be concerned?

Go for it - but I'm afraid you won't be able to get a - very quiet - diesel yet!

No problems here. We have 2,200 miles on our Clubman S and it is used daily. Go for it!

No problem with mine either with nearly 1600 miles on it and a week 3 production. Remember that the majority of owners with no problems don't post. I say go for it!

Mine's new, never has sounded loud (I have a MCC automatic), just sat for two days and sounded completely normal upon this morning's start up.

Cloud is so right - the majority of owners do not frequent the Internet boards and usually it's people who have issues who post about them...unless they're just addicted to MINI sites. Seriously though, there are so many that have never even looked at NAM or MINI2 or Motoringfile.

Kinda along the same topic... how are maintenance costs? I have a friend with a BMW and everytime it is in the shop it costs upwards of $500.00, weather its a sensor or brakes, ect. I have heard that maintenance does cost more but is this true and what is reliability like?

Let me also add to this that I am used to doing my own work on my previous vehicles so anytime it is in the shop I think it costs too much!

No issues here - yet - picked it up Feb. 16th and have 6K miles so far....don't let everything you read keep you from getting a MINI.... In the scheme of things, those who post on NAM are a small percentage of all MINI owners.

The ticking there hearing and reffering to is direct injection. It isnt loud or obnoxious at all!

The Clubman engine is not whisper quiet, like some BMW or Lexus other luxury car engines. This is partly because 4-cylinder engines tend not to be as quiet as a 6 or 8 cylinder engine. Also, there's little or no soundproofing on the hood, so what noise it does make is easier to hear. I think it's about as loud as many other 4-cylinders, but it's certainly not overly loud. There have been some specific complaints, mostly from "S" owners, of an unusually loud engine at start-up. I have not had that experience on my base Clubman, and I consider the engine noise, such as it is, to be perfectly acceptable.

Thanks for all of the responses. I hope to order one within a few weeks if I can convince my wife.

miniclubman , Thats what I was reading about. The start up noise on the "S". There is an actual recording of the sound on another thread in the service section of this site. I was thinking about getting an "S" but I may reconsider and go with the base unit. There both cool.

Nope, no bad sounds here. My complaint is the seat belt wedges sideways between the seat and the door. I have to twist it so that I don't mess up anything when I pull it towards me. Engine/transmission is great after 3,500 miles. Get one!

The Prince engine has direct fuel injection, hence the "dieseling" sounds it has on idle.

Just slide the little seat belt "retainer" up farther along the seat belts towards where you plug 'em in and you should not have this problem anymore. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...89&postcount=7
...there is a guide on the seatbelt that will force the clip to rest over your shoulder near the point where the seatbelt comes out of the b-pillar.

Free factory maintenance for (don't remember the exact time period/mileage). Covers everything except tires.

My 2006 MCS has been great so far. My boot latch failed and had to be replaced last month, but other than that, everything's been on the up and up.

The standard scheduled service is for 3 years or 36K miles whichever occurs first. The bumper-to-bumper factory warranty covers you 4 years or 50K miles (This includes 24-7 roadside assistance), whichever occurs first. Body corrosion warranty is for 12 years/unlimited mileage whichever occurs first.

Same here. The car has been rock solid since we took it home at the end of February.
