Cooper S Cabrio 2005 with roof frame rattles

My '05 cabrio has developed a couple of rattles that seem to come from both sides of the car. It sounds like it's located right above my head on the driver's side and same area on the passenger's. The weird thing is the noise often goes away when I open and close it. Sometimes I have to do it a couple of times and it goes away for a week and then comes back for no apparent reason. It sounds metallic, like loose bushings or something but I can't pin down the exact cause. I also noticed one of the plastic trim pieces that covers the roof frame on the inside / driver's side is loose but it's not the cause of the rattle. It looks like the piece fails to snap back in position when the roof is closed but only on the driver's side. Passenger side moulding is fine and slides right in place when I close the roof.

Also wondering if anyone has tackled replacing the canvas roof on their MINI. I can find many replacement/OEM roof kits but not sure if this is a DIY job.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Are your front speakers working ok? Mine were bad and the cones were rattling. Sounded like it was coming from higher up.

No, speakers are fine. It's definitely something to do with the roof frame. It's coming from right above my head and across on the passenger side at the same location. It's where the flexible joints are so I have a feeling something is loose in there but sometimes when you close the roof the parts must fit better (tighter I guess) and then you hit a bump and it starts the rattle going. Will keep doing it until next time you open/close the roof. You don't hear any of it when it's open, even at slower speeds. It's really weird.
