Visually ID Auto Trans? (CVT or regular)

Greetings, all!
I have searched the forum a bit first but could not find anything definite.
My fiancee is going to look at a 2006 Convertible Mini (not S) with the auto transmission.
I have read that some of the non-S models had the normal 6 speed auto instead of the CVT.
Is there a way to visually ID which transmission it has?
Is the shifter or indicator different?
Is the shape of the transmission pan different enough to tell by looking under the car?
I messaged the person selling it and she did not know the difference.

Thank you!

All 1st Gen non-S automatics were CVTs.

An R52 (non-S) with a CVT is not a good idea. An R52 S with an auto is only a little bit better idea. Both trannies have issues. I would only buy an S with an automatic, if the seller has documented evidence of a replaced valve body or a non-S with a new replaced CVT.

Good luck with your search

You can also run the last 7 digits of the VIN for any MINI or BMW here to find out the build info and options on any car you're looking at: http://bimmer.work/

I talked with a few trans shops up here.....average repair price for an automatic out of a Mini Cooper is $5,000.........that was enough to put a stop to my search for a Mini with an auto trans

I replaced two transmissions for about 600 each! (In the backyard) for my flooded '13 base and flooded '12 countryman S

The originals failed because of my ignorance.
