Inspection Interval Display

Please forgive my ignorance, I searched the forums and didn’t find a thread that answered my questions. I just bought my wife a ’04 MCS with 47K miles. When first started, the car flashes Miles/Inspection -11125 for about 5 seconds before going to regular display. I am assuming that the car “thinks” it is 11,125 miles over due for an inspection. The guy I bought the car from told me that he had been doing his own oil changes and had just recently changed the oil within several weeks.

My questions:

Is my assumption correct about the car “thinking” that it’s over due for an inspection?
How do I know when the car needs an oil change or an Inspection “1” or Inspection “2”?
If I decide to keep the maintenance up myself, I assume I need to purchase some sort of reset tool or is there a procedure to reset the inspection display?

Thank you in advance for your help!

The display counts down to 0 miles then it would be time for your next servicing.

Add the numbers up and it should be about time for inspection II at 60K.

Servicing is required once the meter counts down to 0. If you go beyond that, the meter will show a negative number.

The indicator should say "Inspection 1", "Inspection 2", or "Oil Service" depending on what it thinks your car needs.

Mine had it's Inspection 1 at roughly 27k miles, and now shows "Oil Service" on the indicator at startup.

Thanks for your information! The odd thing about this car is isnt displaying "Inspection 1", "Inspection 2" or "Oil Service"

How do I reset the display or know which service the car "thinks" is required?

It's not completely obvious, but when you first start the car, it will say "Inspection" or "Oil Service" in small text next to the mileage interval.

I can try to take a pic at lunch time to show you what's displayed on my '04 (took my Jeep to work today - been about a month since I last drove it).

You can go to motoringfile.com, and theres the DIY section and they have the instructions on how to reset the countdown timer!

I have followed this procedure up to step 6 with 15000 showing but did not reset. I'm only at 2700 miles now but changed oil at 1250. Note: the 15A and RST are a little difficult to read because of Capital and Small letters.

I think if it has any of the 4/50 warranty left on it I'd bring it in and pay Mini to do the service. Last chance to get something fixed under warranty if they discover a problem.
Regardless of what the previous owner said I'd change the oil as soon as I could. He could be totally honest, or he could be pulling your leg. Oil change is cheap insurance.

I just recently had my oil changed at an independent mini mechanic. I know that the car has had inspection 1 done at 26,000(?) and then after this oil I reset the computer. It is now flashing "Inspection 15500" when I start the display.

Does that mean that the next time is Inspection II?

Thanks,
k

I looked at my car this morning, and I guess I was wrong - it will only say "Inspection" (not "Inspection 1" or "Inspection 2" like I had originally posted) if an inspection 1 or 2 service is required at next service.

It will say "Oil Service" if an oil service is required at next service.

Sorry for the confusion!

How many miles are on your car now? If you've done an oil service after doing an Inspection 1, it would be safe to assume that the next service required will be an Inspection 2.

Mine said "Inspection Service" and an Inspection 1 was performed at roughly at 27k. Now my indicator says "Oil Service 11025" and I'm at almost 32k.

I think it goes like this (mileages are approximate):

15K Oil
30K Inspection 1
45K Oil
60K Inspection 2

And then repeats...

The gauge in the car does not indicate Inspection number.
