My brother asked me what the cap on the right rear of the bumper is for. He said that he noticed that BMWs have this too. I popped the cap and there is a large threaded hole. Do they pull the cars by this (onto the boats, tractor trailers ?) What is this for?

that's exactly what that's for! it's how the nice rescue guys hoist your poor sick MINI up onto the flatbed. There is a hook in your tool pouch just for this purpose....

There's one in the front also, but you have to look for it - passenger side (drivers side in the mother country), down low.

 Phil

It covers the hole for the bulldog.

It also serves as a tie down point during shipment (over the pond). One in front ... one in back. Works, no?

Service guy at my dealer said that the set up there is so strong that you could actually hoist the car off the ground and hang it from that hook in that hole. So who's going to be the first to give that a whirl?
Cheers,

Kind of like bait for the horsepower hogs w/ little or no handling- "Wow, what a tasty looking MINI morsel!" Let 'em bite, wait until the curves, then set the hook

It is definitely the tow point. I'm kinda disappointed that people don't know this -- didn't the dealer check you out on all this before letting you off the lot?

Tow fitting

The screw-in tow fitting is stored in the
onboard tool kit; be sure that it remains in
the vehicle at all times. This fitting is
designed for installation in the tow sockets
located at the front and rear of the vehicle.
It is intended for towing on paved road surfaces
only.

Access to tow sockets

Use a suitable object – e.g. credit card,
screwdriver – to press out the covers from
the recess.

Firmly screw in the towing eyelet
until it stops. If this is not done, the
threads could be damaged.
Never attach tie-down hooks, chains,
straps, or tow hooks to tie rods, control
arms, or any other part of the vehicle suspension,
as severe damage to these components
will occur, possibly leading to accidents.

The inclination of the tow bar generates
lateral force – critical above all if the road
surface is slippery.

Do not tow a vehicle that is heavier
than the towing vehicle, otherwise it
will no longer be possible to control the
vehicle's response.<
