I have this slight whistling noise coming from the sunroof, that varies with the fan speed on the AC. It gets louder when I increase the fan speed, and stops when the AC and fan are off. It sounds like it's coming from the right side, at about the middle of the sunroof. If other's have experienced this noise, did you find a fix for it?

I'm bringing my mini in for service next week, and wanted him to try to fix it. If he can't fix it, it's really not very noticable; and on the good side, I have found that if I play with the fan speed adjustment, I can get it to whistle a pretty good rendition of Yankee Doodle....

Hope someone has a suggestion for fixing it... rather leave the music to the radio...

Thanks,
Steve

we had a similar thing which SOUNDED like it was coming from the sunroof but it was actually the ac blower (we crawled all over the car trying to find the source). it seems when it is set on recirculate it makes the noise. it says in the owners manual to not use the recirc feature longer than 20 mins -- something about the car being to sealed off.

have you tried the AC with recirculate off? does it still make the noise?

Are you sure that you have the sunroof completely closed. If you have it almost completely closed - closed enough that it looks closed, but isn't - it will make a high pitched squealing noise.

drstevenj, I was getting a very high pitched hum or whistle at speeds above 70 mph or so, and it was driving me crazy. It does NOT, however, change pitch, which makes me wonder if what I found out was different. My noise sounds for all the world like it's coming out of speakers- some kind of continual high electrical hum. It is the recirc. air control. I finally isolated it, which was quite a relief. If the recirc light is on and the sound starts, I can turn the sound on and off w/ the recirc control. The dealer was aware of this problem when I took MINI in for some other things. The fix? Keep the recirc off when you're going fast

Thanks for the suggestions. I asked the technician, and he found that my sunroof was adjusted to be uneven on the right side. He realigned it, which changed the pitch slightly, I think from a B sharp to a B flat, but didn't solve the problem.

I'll see if it is related to the recirculate function, but I don't think so. I notice it with the AC on automatic temp. set, and when I have the AC off and only the fan on (with all of the green light functions off). I hadn't thought that maybe it's the blower motor-- that's a good idea.

If all else fails, there's this very enjoyable woman who practices Aikido, and she plays jazz/country violin in a band. Maybe she can bring her violin, and we can work on a duet for violin and mini-whistle.
