Just went for a drive tonight and now that the sun is set and everything is cooling off, it's popping and clicking just as before

The rattle hasn't returned but it always popped before the rattling started...so I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

This car is driving me crazy! It sounds like a can full of coins!

I found out from pro car interior repair people that fixing a rattle is really easy to do and only few things can cause it normally

It could be that something broke off and costs a lot to replace is just a guess.

It seems MINI has released a kit to solve this infamous dash rattle - if your dealer doesn't know anything about it have them contact Rob at Ralph Schomp service.

I'll update in a few days to see if it is still fixed...

BTW - thanks to Rob for hooking me up with a fun JCW Cooper S as my loaner for the day!
I think he might be trying to get you to JCW your MCS

Schomp didn't have all the parts for the dash repair kit so they installed as much as they had and crossed their fingers that it would fix it and hold.

It didn't...

Called them back and ordered EVERYTHING (including new A pillars) - next service appointment in on October 7th...that will be the 5th to repair this issue.

That really sucks, atleast you can know that your dealer is probably just as frustrated as you

After a 50 mile roundtrip to meet the in-laws for dinner the car is parked in the garage until the next service appointment.

It is absolutely unbearable to drive even with the music turned up high. This is by far the worst interior quality vehicle I have ever owned. I have never had a vehicle in the shop so many times for 1 issue that cannot be repaired.

I told the wife, it's your car and if you want to keep it - fine. But I'm not riding/driving in it until this is fixed...

Car is at the dealership

They are installing the full dash anti-rattle hit (including new A pillars) and we asked that they replace the again rattling seatbelt adjuster.

We pick it up later today, and hopefully everything will be fixed.

You should over react!!

I have an 03 MC with CVT and only 23k miles that I ordered from Ralph & Lisa Schomp. I have never had this probleM you are having but I did have to have my glove box door replaced because it would pop open on bumps.

With my luch this will show up on mine here in the next few weeks as I try to sell it when my GP1292 comes in about late October:impatient !! Keep me posted and if you need a ride in another 5280 Mile High Mini just PM me!

Looks like I'll be getting another windshield too since they have to remove it to fix the rattle - that makes 6 windshields in 18000 miles and 1.5 years!

Maybe I should sit in the service bay with the tech and see what they do and make sure it's really nice and felt-ed inside the dash before they put it back together...don't know if Schomp will let me do that because of liability or something though.

Maybe the 07's will be better?

It sounds like your dealer has done quite a bit to try and fix this at a considerable cost. As long as they keep trying I would be happy.

Oh and your letter is perfectly in line but I would have talked to the dealer manager and maybe even showed him/her the letter to see if the dealer could pull some miracle, like maybe a new car. (I know wishful thinking)

Figures I would read to almost the last thread and reply before finding that this may have been solved.

So now the question is, have you been happy with the overall service from beginning to end as it seems to have been a learning experience for both you and the dealer? Just curious since you were starting to question the MINI customer service.

The rattle is a constant buzzing and cracking sound coming from the middle of the dash right above the speedometer. From all my research (and Ralph Schomp's first diagnosis) it seems to be the dash centering pin rattling itself crazy. THIS RATTLE MAKES ME WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR OFF A BRIDGE - IT IS REALLY THAT LOUD AND ANNOYING!

I love this car and it's awesome handling, but these kind of issues are making me think twice about this love.

My letter to MINIUSA is below - am I overreacting?
Perhaps an easier solution would be to turn the volume up on the stereo and ignore the rattle. I once owned a 1989 LeBaron that had so many rattles and squeaks that I can't list them all. One in the passenger door in particular used to drive me mad. If I smacked the door panel it would stop for a while. I once beat the crap out of the door with an umbrella, destroying the umbrella in the process. People looked at me like I was out of my mind. Then came the frequent visits to the dealer for other problems and finally the end came quickly at 69k miles when I traded it in for a Saturn.

You have the right to be annoyed! You pay alot of money for a car and you should expect it to work right. My current car (getting rid of it when the MINI shows up next week) has been in the shop three times for the same starting problem and they still can't fix it. Of course, the starting problem would never happen when I took it in....go figure!

I hope the trip in today got it fixed. If not, keep at it till they finally get it. You should be able to enjoy a quiet trip in your MINI!

Car is still at the dealership

Dealership wants to keep the car until Tuesday or so because of something with the dash. They said the dash was scratched up and they were having someone else come out to refinish it or something.

I donno....

mrdirosa, I understand that the dealship is repetedly trying to fix this, which is nice and all, but my goodness, would I be fuming! I would request, at the least, a freaking gas card! Especially if it turns out, after this visit, that a very thorough exam in the first place could have solved the problem. Then I think you are within your rights to want blood, as well as monetary compensation for your time and gas. I'm sure they won't do this or admit to any fault, but hey, maybe you'll get a stuffed bulldog.

We finally got it back on Wednesday...and although the noises had been muffled on the way home, it starting popping and rattling the next morning. At least it was fixed for almost 24 hours!

I give up, evidently this is not a repairable issue. I'm starting to wonder if the dealership is really doing anything other than pounding on the dash until it stops, then giving it back saying "fixed". I could do that and avoid the hour trip each way...

If anyone else has this issue, don't bother trying to get it fixed - just turn your music up.

i know some people stuck cardboards/EZ felt in the dash to fix
their rattles. my car had a buzzing noise from the passenger door
but fixed it with EZ felt (EZ felt can be had at Michaels Arts & Crafts
and has been one of my favorite buz suppression material).
Kenchan, where exactly in the door was your rattling coming from, and where did you place the felt? I hear something coming from my Passenger's door, but it seems to be around the door handle/tweeter area.

thanks for any info

Mike,
I just had my dashboard rattle on my early 2005 MCS fixed last week. So far so good. I don't know how it compares to yours, but it did take two previous attempts at Schomp. 1st attempt was 5/24/05, 2nd was 6/15/05. Schomp has been very good to me about trying to fix this intermittent rattle, which is especially noticeable when the weather is cold. Seemed to come from the driver's side or in the middle. Apparently the factory recently issued a dashboard rattle service notice for the 2005 model. The service notice included a "creak kit", composed of foam and tape insulation for the internal connections. On my receipt, the service is identified as #51-04-06. I hope this helps.
Rick

That was the same creak kit they installed in mine as well. They followed the new service bulletin they received, ordered all the parts (including new A-pillars and a ton of other parts), and installed it.

Unfortunately it didn't work...but I've gotten tired of driving an hour each way for them not to fix it. Since I've tried to get it repaired, Shomp has only created more rattles.

I REALLY wish they would put a service center in Boulder.....

-Michael
