Lojack to be or not to be?
Hello,
I just bought my 06 MC three weeks and I am scheduled for the lojack install next week, but my question is...is it really needed seeing as how they are equipped with the immobilizer for the engine?
Thanks,
M

Here's another thread on theft rates:

Basically, the MINI ranks 181 on the US theft rate list. So I'm not really that worried about my MINI being stolen. Just make sure you don't give a joy rider an opportunity (like leaving the keys in the ignition)!

The only way I would consider such a thing would be if my insurance company paid for it entirely and then gave me a significant discount on my insurance.
Otherwise, I'd save my money and let my insurance agent be the one laying awake at night worrying about my MINI.
edit: and if my insurance agent was gung-ho about installing a tracking device in my car, I'd be in the market for a new insurance company.

If your car gets stolen do you want it back? I don't Let insurance write me a check and I will go order a new MCS.

You know I have heard the opposite if you do want to keep track of a particular ride. The last anecdote I heard was about finding a guy's car in a shipping container in Miami by the cops. Good for the insurance industry, like they need our help, heh? But for a heavily customized vehicle, it might be a good way to go. Plus the surprise factor to the thieves might be just wonderful if you could actually see their faces.
BUT, I still don't think I'd want my stolen vehicle back, they generally are pretty abused in the interim.

I wouldn't necessary dismiss getting lojack. Insurance companies can offer significant discounts for having it equipped which may pay off its cost quickly if you're paying high insurance rates as is. I would check with your insurance company to see how much of a discount they offer - mine offered a ~10% discount. And I'd rather not depend on my insurance to pick up the cost of the stolen vehicle, as this would mean higher insurance rates in the future for me. In the end, the insurance companies always find a way to make you pay the tab!
That said, I decided against getting a vehicle tracking system installed in my car, mainly because I pay very low insurance premiums as is and the discount offered wouldn't be enough to offset the cost of the device. Besides, as has been pointed out, the MINI is at the bottom of the list when it comes to vehicle thefts. But your situation may be different.

We had Lojack installed in our prev. car...Car got stolen...Lojack located it...Car totaled...Insurance paided for my Mini...Only good thing about Lojack, was it helped the police Quickly find the 3 little punks that took the car. I'm not paying for LJ in my Mini...will let insurance pay for new car!!
ABSOLUTELY the "imobilizer" is complete and utter bull the dealers can get copys of your keys from oxford for a hundred bucks and who sais some car theives dont work at dealer ships
On top of that i already have lo jack, and i hope i never have to use it but it feels safer

I would not mind getting the Lo Jack. I check with local insurance companies and the discount they offer for having it is not worth the money. If you live in an area where carjacking is high, then I will go for it, otherwise, you will be wasting your money.
