R50/53 First Impressions of being an owner
Very nice looking car!
I tossed and turned with getting the cloth vs. leathrette options, and ultimately deciding on the leathrette after sitting in my stepmother's space cloth MINI. I just found them WAY to rough and it felt 'prickly' on my back while in the car. I just found it horrendous, and I will just have to live with the third degree burns I'll aquire by opting for the leatherette in Houston! I don't know why they made it so coarse! I'm also used to the plush cloth in Honda's...
On the topic of AC, I am getting the Auto primarily for cosmetic reasons... It just LOOKS better. The manual is so cheapy and samey looking. I like how the auto AC is laid out like the MINI wings... Plus, I like the fact it has the extra filter - a MUST in Houston (icky air).

Thanks Mini-Mine. Yes, i have to agree, the cloth that i saw in person was like sandpaper, however the space cloth that arrived in my new car was actually a smooth canvas material. I found out after researching on NAM that MINI had briefly stopped offering space cloth as an interior seat as the company that made the cover went out of business. I have to say that the space gray cloth that I have is very different from the 2003 model the dealer showed me. The seats themselves seem to have a black canvas whereas the center portion is the space gray. I am glad my MA made the mistake and ordered the cloth.
on the auto AC... i do like the auto function. its convenient and one less thing to worry about. But if i didnt get the premium package, i dont know if i would have ordered it separately. I'm ok with the manual controls but like you said, it does manage to cheapen the look... especially when i put in extra for the anthracite headlineer, chromeline interior and seven piano black interior. hehe...

One last mod that i am up in the air about is the rubberized sticker that runs along the rear bumper to protect it from scratches while loading/unloading things to the trunk. Its all factory parts from ClassicMINI however the shape of the protector is a bit wide and does not fit very well on the rear bumper. will need some trimming back.
oops-edit - I ordered the rear bumper because my last 02 MINI had several scratches there-kids & their backpacks! No other scratches on my entire car except there, so maybe they are worth it. My baby is still on the boat so I haven't seen it.
