I would also recommend contacting an insurance broker (no, I'm not one and there isn't one in my family). I contacted one when I switched a couple of years ago from American Family.

The big benefit is they represent a bunch of different insurance companies and if you find a good one, like I did, they will regularly check their customers accounts to see if another one of the companies they represent would be less expensive.

When I originally switched from American Family, it was to The Hartford, but at my last renewal earlier this year, we switched to Travellers...and saved even more.

I have referred around 10 people or so to my independent broker and all but one have switched to a new insurance company through her.

Just another bit of information, I did a full analysis, including J.D. Power rankings of the top 10 insurance companies for auto and home, customer rankings, coverage, last time they raised their rates, etc... This analysis is what originally got me in touch with the broker - it's been awesome ever since!

As an FYI, after reading that the MINI USA insurance was offered through Liberty Mutual, I asked an agent about it and had 10% discount applied to my policy.

Difference: ~40% from my current provider.

It varies from provider to provider...

It really is up to the insurance provider. We're with State Farm and the rates on both our first Cooper (non-S) and our current S cabrio have been consistenly cheaper than other cars. Rates on our first MINI were as cheap as the '93 Civic Si we got rid of, and within a few dollars of an '03 Odyssey Minivan. Also, both MINIs have seen a small rate decrease. Currently, we're paying less for insurance (identical coverage for both) on our '06 S cabrio than our '05 Dodge Magnum w/V6. I'm certain there's other providers out there with more reasonable rates, shop around.

I don't understand that... So as a end result of all my phone calls today on the subject I have the CEOs contact info for Progressive.. If anyone is interested in appealing this with me just reaply and I will post all the contact info... I should have to pay more for insurance than a Honda Civic that is modded.... or a Nissan Maxima... and so on...

Esurance dropped our rates by about half what we were paying with All State for the exact same coverage. Alot of people may have concerns about what kind of service one might get from a company that is essentially "faceless" at the local level. However, being in the insurance business myself, I know that insurance is strictly governed at the state level and insurance companies simply must live up to the policy agreements and conditions or they will be in big, big trouble.

'06 MCS - American Family Insurance - WI - $534/year - FULL coverage - $250 deductible.

Still waiting for the bill for the '06 MC. It should be less than the MCS.

i really think MOST of the premium's cost is irrelevant to the actual value of the car until you get to the $40-50k range where its just EXPENSIVE to fix them.

in the midwest, 42, homeowner's insurance also with nationwide, and not a particularly clean driving record

used to pay ~$850/yr to insure an 03 odyssey and a 96 G20. traded the infiniti (kbb value $3500) for an 06 JCW.

insurance rate raised $34/yr.

With USAA, when I traded in the '02 MC for the '03 MCS, my insurance went up $5!

I'm with Shelter and I pay under $300 every 6 months, they've been great with my family and I for many years. They consider it a 4-passenger compact car. I have an 06 MCS. I just turned 25, no tickets

I pay $630 every 6 months for my '05 MCS with State Farm. 34, married, no tickets, excellent credit. These rates are considered to be very low in Miami. Most people here pay in excess of $3K-$4K a year in insurance and this is for any regular 4 door car...

I have to thank everyone here for bringing this back up. I had been with esurance on my last car (a 94 Grand Am with low coverage) and dropped from $180/mo to $100/mo with progressive. with the MCS it only went up to $140/mo (with full coverage, $100/500 deductibles) I then consolidated my girlfriend's and my policies and dropped about $20/mo on each car. (to 335/mo) Today I got an online quote from state farm based on some of the posts here and I was quoted only $225/mo for both! I expect the local agent to call me today or tomorrow and if everything sticks I will change policies for next month. That will be a total of $1200 saved this year alone!

Just goes to show that it never hurts to look around a bit more for insurance

Also, for reference, my rates here in the philly burbs will be higher than many areas of the country. I have good credit, am 26 but not married and no kids. What is interesting to me is that my GF's 2005 Sentra 4 door 1.8l is over $60/mo more expensive than the MINI to insure. wierd.

I have Progressive Insurance and my husband and I pay about 88 dollars for two full coverage cars. I have the 2003 Mini Cooper and he has the 2006 Saturn Ion Level 2. I am 25 year old female and he is a 28 year old male. Maybe our insurance is low because we are married?

I did the exact same thing, then got an ad in the mail from Traveler's asking me to give them a try. Saved another $600 a year for my two MINIs and brand new Ford Fiesta. I think the trick is to shop online every six months.

In the end, insurance companies will charge as much as they think the market will bear. A niche car like the Mini will always bring in a higher price because they think more people are inclined to accept the rate because they want that particular car.

But for now I'll enjoy my "cheap" insurance, compared to my old V8 cars.
I also swapped from a mustang to a mini, and I was paying about a $109 a month for my mustang...even though it was the base V6 and I have a good driving record...as it turns out the rate on the mini isn't much different (even though it's also the base model)

So all I can think is that it's really just how some companies operate, they just take one model and no matter if there are different versions,hp, or whatever they just lump them all in together and charge you as if you got the fastest one out there.

Maybe it's cause it would be too much work to seperate the different model types, maybe cause they're greedy, maybe cause they like being A-holes, who knows but it's just one of those things that makes you hopefully love your mini even more....cause it wouldn't make sense to pay this much for it if you didn't
