Has any heard that Velvet Red for the Mini (not a color, a life style) is coming to an end as a choice?

Calvin77 03-14-2003 10:34 PM

I haven't heard anything official, but apparently it's not the hottest selling color out there..
In fact, I have yet to see one on the road..

Ryephile 03-14-2003 10:37 PM

hmmm, if Velvet Red bites the dust, will there be a replacment (like Silk Green to Solid Gold)?

[ponders possibilities]
Cheers,
Ryan

DaveFrehley 03-15-2003 01:40 AM

That sucks! (personally i like velvet red! I have yet to see one as well, but that's what my baby is going to be.... hopefully i'll get mine before they nix the color so mine will be even more unique! )

Kohu'ulaMINI 03-15-2003 02:08 AM

Haven't heard anything official yet, also. (according to my Motoring Advisor)
If the rumor is true, it's OK by me. Just more "unique" like the Silk Green
I guess VR is catching on in Hawaii

rataha 03-15-2003 04:37 AM

If they do replace it, hopefully it will be a better change than the silk green to gold yuck!

MotorWorf 03-15-2003 05:07 AM

Mini Center (San Antonio, TX) is busy getting their first shipment of cars this weekend. I haven't seen all the cars, but I have seen one velvet red and two silk greens. I think that one of silks and velvet were not on the "sold" list

MotorWorf 03-15-2003 05:08 AM

Oh, while on this thread, does anyone know the breakdown of colors being produced. i.e. percentage of each color over total production? Or at least a ranking of the color popularity.

Thanks,
MotorWorf

Saw the most popularlist on another site and we are a pretty sad lot of people when it is grey. But it is

Chrisscat77 03-15-2003 09:48 AM

I have seen one! parked in front of the state house on beacon hill... my exact car- w/ blck rook anf nav.

can't wait for my velvet red! if they do replace the color then it will only make the velvet redders out there more unique... but i do hope the replacement color is better than the gold. IMHO. where did this info come from?

nfo 03-15-2003 11:03 AM

if i didn't get pepper white, i think velvet would have been my next choice!
there is a velvet red/white car that i see all the time, looks sooo sweet!
if they have to get rid of it, bring on the orange!

BearX220 03-15-2003 11:08 AM

Chrisscat and I are having our VR MINIs built within a couple days of each other during the first week of April, so the color is definitely around for three more weeks.

It is indeed beautiful, but I have heard that VR is the least popular color. The Silvers, light and dark, are most popular.

I like the strategy of rotating colors and offering new ones each year... it makes SG (and maybe VR) cars more noteworthy and keeps up interest in MINIs.

There was talk 6 to 8 months ago about a "candy blue" coming on line that was almost a Day-Glo bright robins' egg blue, but I've heard nothing recently.. could it replace VR?

SquigiDoodle 03-15-2003 11:44 AM

AWESOME - Discontinue Velvet Red!!! It will make mine (soon to be delivered) & others very rare, and in turn, quite valuable. It's such a unique car already but then to own a hard to find discontinued color (dancing around the room wildly) - KOOL.

PigLickJF 03-15-2003 02:40 PM

The Candy Blue color has been around for a long time. There were a very few of them made pre-production. There have been a few rumors here and there since then, but most of them have just surfaced when people have found previously-unseen Candy Blue pics and posted them, thinking it was a new, possibly-upcoming color.

Personally, I think the Candy Blue is a great color for the MINI, and I hope they do finally release it. I also like the Velvet Red a lot though, so it would be a bit sad to see that one go. They really ought to just scrap that Solid Gold though, that one is just awful...

>>Saw the most popularlist on another site and we are a pretty sad lot of people when it is grey. But it is

No need to go dissing grey, dude! The silvers (both pure and dark) are classy looking cars, and they're popular for a reason.
Some might consider velvet red ("Burgundy") a boring color, but hey, to each his own!
A MINI turns heads in any color!

Davenc 03-16-2003 05:00 AM

I'm one of the lucky ones to have taken delivery of my silk green before they dropped the colour. It would be a shame if velvet red is next. Recently saw one with white and the cordoba interior - seriously classy and rice.

Rocketboy_X 03-16-2003 11:12 AM

The funny thing is, when in Japan last year, one of the three MINIs i saw was electric blue, and the other was velvet red..

red03miniS 03-16-2003 11:38 AM

i think the velvet red is a really nice color

problem with rare colors seem to be if you get in an accident, its SUPER DUPER hard to match

i work for acura, and i see everyday that bodyshops we sent cars to at times (due to sales people scratching them or wahtever), they bodyshops can never match antracite and pearl white

good thing my pearl white lexus has yet to get in an accident

Exact opposite!
If I didn't get Velvet Red, me thinks an all Pepper White would be next choice.
The MINI sales manager has a PW and it looks SWEET!!!

I've heard people say, "I saw a brown MINI, I didn't know they made a brown MINI"...

I saw my first VR at my dealership on Friday and I can see what they meant. Although it is a very likable color, under certain light, it could be mistaken for brown. Don't misunderstand...I liked it!

.....but that's the beauty of Velvet Red, it shows a multitude of colors in different light, shade, time of day, etc.

I've heard it described as brown, black, burgundy, plum, and black cherry. Very unique and more so if the rumors become true.

dbwilldo 03-17-2003 05:11 AM

Makes me even more happy that I got the VR!

I know in SCMM I have only 1 of 2 VR's, and I've never seen another on the Road here in SoCal! make me glad I got that color too

Indy_Archy 03-17-2003 06:51 AM

Haven't seen any VR's on the road in Indy. I also like the option of introducing new colors every year. My choice for a great color would be a bright metallic orange. Put a white top on it and call it a dreamcicle!!

OBXMini 03-17-2003 08:29 AM

On the Mini2 site I saw someone posted that there will be an end to Velvet Red at the end of this month and that there will be a new light Blue and an Orange coming out to replace...

I grabbed to phone as quickly as I could to confirm that my order was in safely for the Velvet Red with White - P# 3731055 !

I am really happy with my choice - I think it's a very classy look and I am thrilled that it is going to be a rare color!

RKMaroon 03-17-2003 10:28 AM

Sure stay off the boards a few days and someone wants to bump off my color.
Passing the security gate this morning I handed my badge and pass to the guard. He said he didn't need to see my vehicle pass, he wasn't likely to forget my car.
