R50/53 Color confusion
Color confusion
Having a WTF moment.
My MINI is Astro Black/Astro Black and I was awarded the metallic surcharge of $450.00. I can spec a CR/PS MINI and get no surcharge, even though it involves painting 2 colors and has a metallic roof.
Does this make sense to anyone? I would think that any 2-tone combo would be more expensive to produce, given the additional step of masking between colors.
And why $450 for metallic? All that is required is adding maybe $20 worth of materials during the color mix. It's not like the non-metallics are a single stage finish vs 2-stage for the metallics?
Speaking of 2-tones, why the limitation on secondary colors? Since MINI/BWM is pushing the you-ification stuff, why not really let us have some choices? Envision PS/EB, or DS/CR, or maybe PW/HO combos.
AND BRING BACK THE BRIGHT COLORS!!!! If we wanted BMWs, we would have bought one!
And since I'm on a roll, Convertibles:
Why, oh why, isn't a tan top available??? This would make infinitely more sense for a CR convertible with Cordoba interior, than green or blue.
Green? I want to know what drugs someone was on when they made green an available choice for a red MINI, so that I can avoid said drugs like the plague! They obviously have a profound effect on matters of taste!

MINIUSA, are you listening?

3Kitchens, you really took the "youification" thing seriously... and more power to you! I've been wondering the same thing (more or less).
No offense to all you LY/B fans, but can you say Bumblebee? How about LY/HB? or PW/PH? At least I could find my car in the parking lot!
And the color choices definitely have gone south... Even General Motors has more interesting colors. Mrs. Dread is pushing for the AB/AB, and I admit is has some appeal, in a reserved stealthy kind of way, but I want color dammit! Make it fun. CR/W... cool, but how many have been built? HB/W... ok, especially with the matching dash. But where's the real choice?
Now, to add insult to injury, we are down to just 3 colors that don't have the metallic surcharge. I have no doubt that the geniuses at MINI/BMW found most people will drop $450 bucks to add a little profit to the sale. I suspect they also looked at the market data and found that the "fun" colors weren't selling as well as the more "traditional" colors. How else do you explain RG? Elegant, perhaps, but it also looks vaguely military in an olive drab kind of way. (Sorry to all RG fans... the RG/PS combo is stunningly understated.) What if you could pay $600 for any color you wanted? THAT would add some profit.
So... rant over. I apologize in advance for all whom I offended. I love that we have so many choices in putting a car together... but why not go a little further?

Supposedly they are going to bring back some better colors in '07 (dunno if they will be metallic or not/hope not). Maybe they are just dulling down the '06 color choices so the new '07 model will come out with more of a bang

This is an interesting idea...why not mix and match colors how ever you want? It's not like they have to make the mirror caps match the roof color which may be one reason why there are limited roof choices now. You actually do pay a surcharge for the roof in that in order to get my silver roof I had to pay $150 for the spoiler which there's no way I would have spent the $$$ for otherwise.
I had a customer order a solar red and had me get the top and mirrors painted pepper white. I wish that I would have taken pictures, it looked very cool. I still can't get over them getting rid of Jet black.

When I see the off-white PW "in person" I'm always very disappointed......yes I know that ordinary white is common and PW is "unusual"; I'm simply not a fan of PW. Had there been a pure white option I would surely have opted for that.

My fantasy combo du jour is PW with bright orange roof/ mirrors.
And orange wheels. And orange stripes.
OK, maybe not for everyone.
Or, how about Space blue with Electric Blue trim?
PH with LY? OK, maybe not.
MINIUSA, are you out there? WE WANT COLORS !

47 shades of gray. Just what everyone wants. Is the person in charge of color choices color blind?
There is one assembly line, nicht war? And all of the available colors are loaded into the painting robots, right? So why are there arbitrary limitations on what can be sprayed?
Inquiring minds want to know!
MINI is supposed to be a fun car. Why saddle us with BMW colors (sedate, stately, boring; pick one)?
Still waiting for a reply from MINIUSA. <taps foot>
