BMW hailed a Mini boom on Monday, announcing that production of the compact cars hit a record 200,000 this year. The 200,000th car, a Mini Cooper S Convertible, was sold to an Australian owner, the company said. BMW took over production of the Mini in 2001, setting an initial production target of 100,000 per year.

"It's thanks to the hard work, flexibility and commitment from the plant's associates that we have been able to achieve this. It's a great way to end the year for everyone at the plant," said Anton Heiss, the plant's managing director.

BMW said its total production of Minis now stands at 766,000.
