42 mile per gallon MINI Cooper S!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IM I DREAMING ? I WAS LEAVING WORK JUST GOT MY PAYCHECK AND ALL I HAD ON ME WAS 2 DOLLERS FOR GAS AND I WAS BASICALLY EMPTY, BEING 45 MILES FROM HOME AND ENOUGF FOR 1 GALLON OF GAS PLUSE WHAT ELSE I HAD IN THEIR I WAS HOPING TO (sorry got rid of the caps) get home on that but i was risking it
i thought. well i get on my way down i-275 south and deside to take it slow so i set the cruis to 65 miles per hour or so (not digital so i cant give perfect number) and reset my miles per gallon indicater and just moving on my way about 35 minutes later i glance at my indicater and load and behold im averaging 41.5 then jumping to 42.1 then back again, i have 20986 miles on the car and if this is an indication of a well brokin in engines gas milage then us s owners are in for a nice treat when the gas prices jump, just cant go over 69 or the milage shoots to like 32 to 29
has anybody out their found the same findings in gas milage?
this is no joke ill send pics if yall want proof.
i average 5000 miles a month so if this is the speed i have to travel to get thes numbers then i will be definetly be changing my driving habits
ohhhhhhh the savings $$$$$$

If you really want to prove these numbers, then I suggest ignoring the computer and doing a manual calculation. Fill your MINI up (with gas) and then go out and drive 30 - 50 miles at highway speeds. Return to the same gas station, fill it up again, and note the mileage and amount of gas it takes to re-fill.
I seriously doubt that you'll see over 35 mpg. Probably much close to the 25 or so reported by 2minis (and most of the rest of us MCS owners).
It seems that your reported calculations relied on a highly subjective observation that your tank was "almost empty" and that you were able to make it the 45 miles home on the gallon of gas you bought with the 2 dollars. Most importantly, you neglect to mention how much gas was left in your tank when you actually got home. Thus, all you have is the computer's average mpg calculation...and these computers are known to be quite inaccurate (a number of posts on this). Further, when the MINI's gas gauge (which is also known to be inaccurate in some cars) reads empty, it still has about 1.1 gallons in the tank. Thus, I contend that you probably traveled your 45 miles on closer to 2 gallons.
Sorry to be so picky, but gas mileage is both a touchy issue AND quite easy to establish with hard data. If you can truly substantiate this high number, that'd really be something.

The best I got so far was 27...
Normally my MPG average is 19.
And believe me I always fuel at the same place and keep a clean record of it manually and no grater than 30 never...
In my tuck going 60 mph down hill I get 39 mpg but as soon as I hit the gas the consumption goes to 12, you have to go for the average not for the spot consumption.

anything is better than my friends h2....this week we filled up his car with a buncha guys and headed over to a party on the other side of town......he got a amazing 7 MILES PER GALLON! luckly he didn't ask us to chip in for gas!
I thought my computer was being rather euphemistic--claiming 43 mpg--so I calculated it myself: highway driving, only 1500 miles on the car, I was actually getting 39mpg. After all the average mileage I'd seen and heard I was pleasantly surprised. It drops considerably in the city, though. Maybe 22mpg but that's still better than alot of averages I've seen. At just over break in, I'm excited!
Congrats, Loaded! I hope I'm as lucky.

I just got my MCS last weekend. I filled it up in Dallas, drove 280 miles and filled it again (as much as I could get in to be sure it was accurate) - It took 9.2 gallons for the 280 miles or about 30.4 mpg - on a brand new engine. I drove the speed limit which was 70 mph most the the way and 75 part of the way. Once the engine in broken in, it should improve.

As Inigo Montoya said in The Princess Bride, "I don't think that word means what you think it means." 43mpg would be OPTO-mistic, but I have calculated 35mpg on the highway with my Cooper, but regularly get 28mpg around town.

OPTI-mistic would certainly work here, but I meant euphemistic. As in, my OBC was substituting a much nicer average than the rather harsh reality of it all.
But it's all good between MINI owners

loaded: on I-275? you must be in the Detroit-area! We're neighbors
props to your mpg findings. you must've held the accelerator really steady and just caught everyone's draft on 275, since everyone on that road does 90
I imagine the very cold air helps a bunch with efficiency.
My 3-series OBC is a bit optimistic too, reads a mpg average of 25, but in reality it's about 23.5 - not a big difference, but still off.

>>Mileage ... smileage ... 42 is nice but who cares. I don't know if I get 2, 22, 42 or 102. That's not the point for me. To each his/her own. Have fun.
I see that this is a common sentiment on this thread, but have to note that on other threads there ARE people who do care about mileage. Few have made any reputable claims over 35mpg, but it's still a concern related to getting as good mileage as feasible. Personally, I DO think that gas mileage makes a difference, although it's not the only reason I bought the car. This becomes increasingly important -- beyond the basic point of social responsibility -- when premium fuel creaps up beyond $1.80 in my area....with little top end in sight.
$25 to fill up my MCS isn't quite in Ford Expedition territory, but it's getting a bit painful.

I think your OBC is wrong. There was probably more fuel in the tank than was registered. I really don't trust my OBC to be particularly accurate, but it's good at estimating the mpg. I've never done better than 31.5 mpg and this was calculated on sustained hwy driving with no stops for about 110 miles. I think the best way to test the hwy mpg would be for one of our mid-west members to do a 200 mile run or so on the hwy in 5th gear with the cruise control set at 65 mph or so.
Of course there could be some truth that you got much better fuel consumption because you were babying it and driving with a light touch.
On the other hand, maybe you had a miraculous MINI experience, and like Strega Nona's spaghetti pot your MCS was magically producing what you needed!

Hmmm.......I average 90-100mph on the highways when possible and occasionally dip into the 110's. I average upper 20's on highways b/c of this and about 23mpg overall. But unlike in my last car, I DON'T drive the MINI nicely for good gas mileage.
ok i am planning a trip to florida next month so i will report my findings then,
but hey lets keep a open mind on this it could happin and be a true reading or pritty close.
Ryephile yea where nebores i attend C.C.S next to the D.I.A in detroit and work in farmington and live in southgate so i travel a big triangle every day
where you at?
any way thanks to all hew are open to this idea and remeber cars get better gas milage with more milage aquired and the engine gets looser.
but to a point.
but it might have been one of those days where the wind is right and the temp is right and just every thing is working in unison you never know!
talk to all ya later

Loaded,
Unless you are driving a "magical" MCS, getting 42 mpg is damn near impossible. If you COMPLETELY emptied out that gas tank, filled it with exactly one gallon of gas and began your trip 40 miles from home, I'd bet you'd be doing a LOT of walking.

So I was wondering....
I know that driving conditions and individual driving style factor heavily into total fuel consumption BUT... since there are obviously discrepancies (i.e some people like myself are getting pretty freakin' wonderful mileage and others are not) is there a difference between '02 and '03 models? Did they perhaps upgrade the software in such a manner that would make the engine and/or fuel delivery system just a wee bit more efficient between the model years?
I, personally, am hangin' in the same camp as jsun as far as social responsibility to limit my fuel consumption so I shift early and don't drive like an idiot--though I still have plenty of fun. Hwy speeds I'm generally comfy at 70-75mpg. SO I was just wondering if, in addition to my precautions, I'm getting a little help from the car itself.
Oh... and... << I think the best way to test the hwy mpg would be for one of our mid-west members to do a 200 mile run or so on the hwy in 5th gear with the cruise control set at 65 mph or so. >>
If at 65mph why not in 6th? As soon as I get up around there I'm in 6th for cruising. If I need power I can downshift but the RPMs come down and the car feels "calm".
Curiously,
