I noticed on MiniUSA that runflats don't come with the car. It's an option however they list something called space saver wheel and tire. What is that exactly?

2minis 02-04-2003 06:16 PM

It is the run of the mill small size spare.
Someone will correct me if I am wrong. If
you get runflats...I don't believe you get
a spare in either the Cooper or the S.
I recently drove a Cooper with the 15 inch
non-runflats and had a great drive.

2minis has it correct

standard Cooper has 15" wheel/tire combo plus a space-saver spare (aka donut) The space-saver is a temporary wheel/tire that can only be used at limited speed for limited mileage. It's better than nothing, and it doesn't have the weight of a full-size spare tire.

When you order a Cooper with sport package, or any Cooper S, there is no spare tire of any sort, and you get run-flat tires.

Ok, just making sure it was a spare. Thanks

Here's the deal...

I took delivery of my MINI Cooper on 1/21. I have 16" Goodyear Eagle NCT run-flat tires and love them. I happen to like the added piece of mind that the run-flats provide. The harshness of the ride is acceptable to me, because the roads here in Florida are fairly smooth to begin with.

I DEFINITELY have a space-saver spare under the car. I've seen it and checked the air pressure in it myself. The Cooper S does not come with a spare.

SCMiniGuy 02-04-2003 06:38 PM

By the way, I have the sport package....

LockjawDavis 02-04-2003 06:41 PM

I have the 16" Dunlop run-flats. They're a bit rough (I joke that you can feel the lines on the road when changing lanes), but I like 'em a lot on dry pavement. I also have a dinky spare tire. I believe all Coopers, regardless of tire option, come with a spare. Not true, of course, for the MCS.

For the US at least all Coopers come with a spare tire (space-saver). The MCS doesn't come with a spare because the battery occupies the space that the spare goes into.

So for MCS the only option is Run-flat tires.

i wonder how the good year runflats compare to the dunlop's?
i'll be ready to retire the dunlop's for some better tires as soon as spring rolls around...

That's not correct...I saw MC on dealer floor with sport suspension and runflats and it had the small spare underneath....I was told all MC's have spares regardless of the tires and suspension

Mexibeetle 04-29-2003 08:20 AM

You're right. The battery takes the place of the spare in the MCS. (The MC battery is up front.)

rataha 04-29-2003 10:11 AM

Cooper's all have spare tire CooperS's no spare tire, regaurdless of options ordered.
