Ian Cull's AutoUp

Several questions about this auto up switch for someone that has installed it.

1. What happens if the window is half way down and you tell it to auto up?

2. Does it allow the key fob to close the windows?

3. How hard is it to install. I kinda messed up the parcel shelf install and I'm not very good at install. Funny cuz I'm in the after-market radio biz.

Thanx for the help.

Waterway4 Sep 28, 2005 08:58 PM

1. "Auto Up" works regardless of position of the window.

2. I don't think Ian's circuit effects the operation of the key fob. What you had programmed before installation is what you have after installation.

3. Most any idiot can install the circuit. It's a 10 minute job. Much easier than the Parcel Shelf.

Eric_Rowland Sep 29, 2005 12:22 AM

1. The <insert reverence here> circuit just tells the motor to run for six seconds. If it's already halfway up, the positive stop shuts off the motor.

2. The circuit does NOTHING to/for the key. Nada.

3. It's fairly simple, but you do need sorta small hands, or the willingness to pop off the downtubes. If you're really nervous, send me a ticket and I'll do it for you.

Ian's site is very informative. Included detailed instructions and many, many people's reviews of the product. Link

This was the first and best thing I installed in my car. For me, it took about 2 minutes, and my hands are not small. There's an access panel at the bottom of the center console, and I simply jammed my hand into it, groped until I found the connector, unlatched and unplugged it, and reversed the process installing the circuit. The entire process can easily be done blindly by feel.

The circuit simply plugs between the stock wiring connector and the socket on the back of the toggle switch panel. Installation is even easier because the ribbon cable attached to the circuit is extra long giving you more slack to work with. It's completely reversable and does not cut or affect any of the vehicle's systems. Ian includes full-color picture installation instructions for each model of car and configuration of the circuit.
The circuit does not do anything unorthodoxed to the car's electrical system--it simply sends the same signal to the window motors as if you held the toggle up manually--and you can activate or deactivate the function on either or both windows whenever you want by holding "lock" and "window" together for a few seconds, or "unlock" and "window" together for a few seconds (for example, if you have kids in the passenger seat and you're worried they might get their hands pinched).

I also got the DSC track option and the auto fog piggyback option.

Cool thanx all. I guess I'll give it a try. You made me feel better since the shelf is harder.

Just bought 2, one for each MINI.

chrisneal Sep 29, 2005 10:11 PM

Thanks for the reminder about this; I just ordered one, too. The website said that as of today, he had shipped 977 of them, and that he was only making 1000. So, if you want one...

I just sent Ian some $$$. Now I have to get on my knees and pray for a quick shipment. Hey as long as Im down there I may as well do it outside and wait for the delivery and I might as well get out the tools and kneel by the car and get ready to do the install.

Hey so ounce its installed what do you all do? Go for a drive with the switch and hit as many tolls as possible?

Thanx Ian for making such a great thing.

Now if I could only figure a way to fit that double din radio in the single din slot.

shack01 Sep 30, 2005 11:13 PM

Installed the circuit just last week. I chose the "remove-the-downtube" technique as I was also installing a six-switch toggle bank. As others have noted, very straightforward install with excellent instructions, including color photos. Also had Ian include the garage door option so that it now operates off of the door un-lock switch. Suhweeeeeeeeet.

Now if he would just make a hood scoop mod that was activated with the lights and gave the Knight Rider / Cylon look like some one's sig block . . . .

Thats not called a cylon look on a car its called a KITT look. Thats that trans-am from the 80's that talked and had a personality. it was indestructible and was driven by David Hasslehoff. Yea that just wont be cool on a mini. Although my Mini has a lot more personality that KITT did.

OK I will tell you what a Geek I am...Knight Industries Two Thousand...KITT. O'yea I'm a geek. But I was a kid back then.

Howdy ninjamini.

I am older than you, you young whippersnapper and I call foul!

The original "Battlestar Galactica" was on in the late 1970's and the Cylons were famous for their moving red "eyelights". Nightrider "borrowed" it seveal years later...that's ok, TV is nothing if not a cannibal.

I wish that light was available for the MINI S though....it would be so cool......yeah, I'm a Geek also, but I'm serious about the light, I'd love to have it!

Thank you, anteken, for validating my post. (Of course, that means I'm old, too, I guess. Oh well.) Driving a Mini makes one FEEL lots younger, unless its the Short Bus driver.

Yep Shack, we old farts have to stick together.

By the way, I just checked, Ian's gizmos are officially sold out.

Mini2Go Oct 2, 2005 03:23 PM

Awwww!! NUTS!!!

I wish I'd noticed the 1,000 cutoff sooner.:cry: I don't get to spend as much time on here as I used to - and it's actually been more lately than for a long time. I didn't see this 1,000 item limit until today. :eek2:

Anyone selling?

WTB: Ian's Auto-up Circuit. Only reasonable offers please.

I think I'd like one of those

sagworks Oct 2, 2005 03:57 PM

just installed in my '06.

Doing the blind install I found it hard to get the conncetor out. I have teeny hands and was able to fit both hands in there, but had trouble getting the latch to slide over. though my other half helped me out a bit. Freakin' easy install otherwise. Both windows auto-up magically. In case your reading this, Thanks Ian - kickass product!

I second that; I just installed mine tonight!https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...es/NAMgrin.gif For some reason I only ever seem to install mods when it's dark out. That includes the air intake on my '03. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...AMrolleyes.gif I'm not sure that I agree with those who say this is easier than the parcel shelf. It took less time, but I really had to contort my hand and wrist, and it was a bit more stressful since I was worried about bending the connecting pins on the back of the toggle bank.

Very psyched to have this. I hope for others' sake that someone takes up the torch and continues to make these. Ian has DIY instructions posted on his site for those with the knowledge and inclination.

I finally installed my Ians auto window up today. I tried shortly after it arrived last fall. I pulled out the wrong connector and freaked out! Got that one back in its correct place and put it all away for the winter. So, today it is kinda warm - in a Wisconsin sorta way - and I've done a couple of simple mods on the other car. My MINI, yes, today is the day. Not really very difficult, but, I found it really scary! I did the blind option as my hands are fairly small. I had an extra toggle bank to look at and that helped me alot. Much more of a mod than the parcel shelf headwise. I'm not at all mechanically inclined so anytime I manage to do one of these things it seems like an accomplishment! Oh yeah, and it WORKS! Very cool.

That's pretty impressive - I thought I had read that the "blind" option is extremely difficult on the 05/06 models. On our two '06s, I just unbolted the downtubes and tilted them out of the way and removed the two screws holding the toggle panel in. I knew from the start that I wasn't going to be able to fit even one of my mitts behind the toggle panel!

GBMINI Apr 3, 2007 06:13 AM

The "blind" option HURTS much more on '05/'06 MINIs than older ones!
On both my newer MINIs, I've replaced the "storage" tray under the switches with the older simple plastic vent/cover piece - I use the wonderful "hot pocket" for my storage needs, and the older piece is much easier to remove/re-install if I need to test a new MINI circuit version.

Agro Apr 3, 2007 12:01 PM

I have pretty big hands and installed 2 circuits in 06 cars during AMVIV. I've only ever used the blind method. It can be rough on the hands, but it's not too bad.

GBMINI Apr 3, 2007 12:33 PM

You & me both, Agro :)

STEWIE May 12, 2007 10:56 AM

Ive got Auto Up!!!

Just installed my auto up!!! Took 5 minutes and I did the "blind" install.
Works like a charm!! Scratched my hand a bit but only trying to find the release.
Thanks Ian.

That circuit is awesome... I'm just happy that I luckily got mine before he quit making them.
