Please tell me it's not true!

I got in a heated debate with some friends and they said that my Mini Cooper S engine is the same as a "DODGE NEON" engine. Can someone please tell me if that is true or not? The last thing I want to do is to pay for a 30K "DODGE NEON".

For better or for worse, the Mini 1.6L motor is Chrysler designed and built motor. It's not a Neon motor, but it's still from Chrysler fwiw-The next gen motors are made by Peugot with a lot of design and engineering from BMW incorporated in them.

It is if you're talking about the non-US market Neon. Or PT Cruiser. Plenty of info on this subject if you care to do a search. Seeing as it's already been discussed in the last week, probably not too many folks will want to regurgitate the info again.

Dude, please do a forum search. This topic has been discussed ad naseum!

Yes the MINI engine is a MOPAR design dating back to the mid 1990's. It was co-developed between BMW and then Chrysler Corporation before the hostile 1998 take over.

The engine is manufactured in Curitiba, Brazil at one of the most advanced engine plants in South America: TRITEC MOTORS.

The engine in the Cooper model is used in EXPORT ONLY versions of the Chrysler Neon and Chrysler PT Cruiser and a Chery small sedan manufactured and sold in China.

The MCS Supercharged engine is exclusive to the MINI Cooper S and it is not shared with any other car.

Our engines have proven to be bulletproof and the Chrysler/MOPAR heritage behind them is NOTHING to be ashamed of.

Woah, woah, there... The MINI engine block is made by Chrysler, and is used in some of their Euro cars. Other than that, nothing is the same. Someone check me if I'm wrong. The transmission, supercharger, and most of the other systems are all BMW parts made for MINI. If someone thinks you're getting a $30k NEON, just have them drive it, then drive a NEON.

No doubt - now when they start putting I-Drive in the MINI, well, THEN we can get worked up. . .

Transmission is made by Getrag (Manuals) or ZF (Cooper CVT) or Aisin (MCSa).

The Supercharger is made by American manufacturer Eaton.

I can give you a complete list of the suppliers to the MINI and you'll have some unexpected surprises here and there.

Pt Cruiser

It's the same as the PT cruiser non-US market....The BMW-Chrysler deal went through before MB merged with Chrysler...hence no more engines will be built by Chrysler.

---sorrry about the half post...I got busy at work...

I don't know how much this will tell you or if it even matters but here is a link to motoringfile.com (Gabriel Bridger's website)

http://www.motoringfile.com/2005/01/20/a_world_of_parts

"A World of Parts" that appeared in National Georaphic in 2003

Here is a Scan that was posted within that story.

I don't know what all the fuss is anyway? We don't drive dodge neons. And next year we won't be driving peugots. No matter what we will still be driving MINIs.

So it seems the short answer is:

If you're in America, not true at all.
If you're in Europe, true, for some value of "true".

Who cares. The original Mini shared a common engine with agricultural tractors and they still managed to win the Monte a few times! I would be a little more p'd off if I bought a Jag and found out it was a Ford Taurus!

Isn't the X-Type Jag based on the Mondeo, which I believe was the European replacement for the Contour? Just checking. . .

Yes the Jaguar X-Type is based in the European Ford Mondeo sedan and the Jaguar S-type is based on the Lincoln LS/Thunderbird/Mustang platform known as the LS98.

I don't know, guys. I spoke to a salesperson at Bauer Jaguar across from Crevier Mini and he told me that the new Jaguar station wagon was based on the same basic platform as the old Ford Taurus. Maybe he was yankin' my chain?

Just as long as MINI doesn't try and do any platform sharing with Land Rover, I'm cool. . .
