I've been caught!
Well when I tried to visit the NAM forums today, I found out my employer has blocked the site! Apparently visiting frequently on a daily basis is frowned upon, although somehow eBay is allowed?! wtf? I get all my work done...bastards. Its their fault that they don't give me more to do! :sly:
|
To see how sophisticated their blocking software is, try the IP address of the site: http://69.93.166.248

luckily my employer's firewall thingy
doesn't block this but the thing is crappy ...
It is a sonicwall and it blocks all kinds of strange sites that it should not. btw, ebay also works fine.... :) |
That SonicWall add-in software blocks via a paid subscription to a list of sites to be blocked. You can also specify specific sites to block or unblock. I have quite a number of SWs installed at various companies around the Bay Area. I don't really like the subscription based products, but for schools, I have no choice since kids will find everything under the sun, good and bad.

One option you still have is to quit working for the bastard and go to work for yourself, then you can spend as much time as you want looking up stuff on YOUR company computer:thumbsup:

I agree with D.J. Quit and start your own company!!

http://spiderproxy.com
It loads the web site for you. Some problems with 'logging in' to some sites, but you can still browse publicly. |
Thanks for the advice... I like the idea of my own company yes...but doing what exactly? Hmm...25 is indeed too old to be working for the man.

Clover  |
Nah, too much stress being the boss. But definitely change jobs to a place that's less uptight.
If they can't respect a MINI enthusiast, they don't deserve your talents! |
Stress always comes with being the boss. But if you do things right, putting in the sometimes 65 to 80 hour work week, making the tough calls, a nice big pay check, nice cars, nice home, nice vacations and a great retirement are the payoff for taking the RISK for being the boss:wink:
Its always nice to call your own shots, and as a rule, you can only do that by doing what Mr. B.B. King calls, paying the cost to be the boss:grin:  |
I don't own the company, but I am the IT manager.
Membership has it's privileges! |
Well the only way I have to look at it (for the meantime anyway) is that this so-called job that is preventing me from enthusiasting with other enthusiasts is paying my MINI payment each month! So I'd probably better hang on to it, eh? :sly:
|
Yeah, I think if I was you, I would keep your so-called job until you find an employer who doesn't care what you do on company time.
If I read between the lines here, it sounds like to me that you don't think much of your so-called job. Don't gripe, quit, and find a job that fits you better. If you get your days work done early, ask your boss if he or she has any other tasks that need to be done. Remember you are on company time. Always try and do more than your getting paid for. Most employers reward hard working people with pay raises or other perks. You should try it:thumbsup: |

Ya know why he blocked the site? Just because he can. He who signs the checks, makes the rules, and he that makes the rules, well...just rules:grin:
|
If you truly think it's BS that the site is blocked (that you don't visit it terribly often, or only on "break time"; another issue - look at chain smokers (nothing against them - it's their habit ) that take about 5-10-15+ breaks during the day to get their nic fit... you're just getting your MINI on...) talk to them.
They may have just looked at the weblogs and seen the number of visits and determined that it's not a worthwhile site. Convice them otherwise. Our #1 hit site in our company (500+ people) is eBay, followed by Yahoo, followed by ESPN and CNN. None of them have anything to do with our business - the "net nanny" software (not that product, btw) does block adult content :eek2:... they don't seem to care what people do otherwise - it's the manager's job, not IT's. I work in the IT dept. too, BTW, and I think this policy works pretty well - I surf all I want when I get home... their roost, their rules. I have the right to vote with my feet if I strongly disagree. |
