R50/53 What has your MINI been mistaken for?
The Pontiac Vibe is the same chassis and basic structure as the Toyota Matrix, but I gaurantee no one calls their Vibe a Toyota. Many small British car companies (ie Invicita) use the Ford Mustang V8, but no one says those cars are made by ford. IMO it doesn't really matter that Chrystler had a hand in the engine design, becuase the BMW/MINI execution is decidedly un-Chrystler in its quality (nothing against Chrystler, of course). My 2p.

I have contacted MINIUSA for their view if a MINI Cooper is a BMW or a MINI. When I receive their response I will let everyone know. That will settle it as for as I am concerned.

I think I know what the reply will be. Something "politicaly correct" that will not answer the question.
The acid test for me is if someone is intent on calling a MINI a BMW then they must be just as insistant on calling a Rolls-Royce a BMW.

I think that the MINI/BMW differences are much greater than those of Honda/Acura, VW/Audi, etc. I was merely pointing out that MINI dealers are, in fact, BMW dealers.
Of course, of all the things the MINI would be mistaken for, a BMW is pretty far down the list, except for those side grill thingies. And the radio.

OK
For everyone who thinks their MINI is a BMW. This is what MINIUSA said.

Good morning!
That's a confusing thread if you ask me (maybe I need a few more cups of coffee). But here is what we say to help people understand the similarities and differences:
MINI and BMW are two completely different and separate brands and makes. The MINI Division, which is a division of BMW of North America, LLC, began distributing MINI motor vehicles in the United States in March of 2002. Prior to this time, MINIs had last been distributed in the United States in 1967. MINIs are supplied to the MINI Division by a MINI factory in Oxford, England. In addition, MINI has its own dealership network and staff. This arrangement is similar to other corporations, like Ford and GM. For example, Lincoln, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, and Land Rover are brands and makes that are all owned by Ford Motor Company, but they are not Fords. In short, MINI is a unique brand and make that has started with two models for the U.S. market˜the Cooper and Cooper S. These are MINIs and not BMWs.
Does this help? I hope so. Let me know if you have any other questions.
LET'S MOTOR.
