Egghead Alert: Check Tire Pressure!

Uh, I be the egghead on this one. My tire pressure light went on recently - second time in a month. Found a nail the first time and had the problem corrected - or so I thought. I never doublechecked the tire pressure from the shop. Noticed handling getting a little looser - figured it was my runflats getting fairly bald - then tire pressure light goes back on. This time I have my tire pressure gauge in the car. Don't see any of the usual suspects but check rear left and get a 0 reading. Check the other three and all are at 21 lbs. And I drive some serious twisties to and from work everyday.

Moral of the story. When checking the oil each fill up, check yer tire pressure and you may actually get your handling back.

Egg on face, go easy on me, it won't happen again.

Mike

P.S. As much as I'd like to deep six the runflats, they've saved my butt quite a bit already. I'll take a harsher ride for the security of running at zero pressure!

You see runflats are a good thing:smile: I am happy my car has them.

Tire pressure

Great advice! Just be sure to check your air pressure with a good quality gauge, and throw out the cheapie pencil-style gauges you get from the checkout counter.

Also be sure to reset the runflat monitor after adjusting air pressure, rotating, or installing tires.

That would probably be close to where my tires were at since the three good ones were all right on 21. I always hear stories here about not trusting dealers to have the basics taken care of, but I have finally learned my own lesson.

Was that wrong? I think the tires should only have between 25/30 in them. What's the pressure chart say in the manual/door jamb. I think it depends on the tire size and load in the car. My 16 in. chart says 26 PSI, so if you have 16's that's not too far off.

38 for 17" runflats

The 17" Dunlop 9000 runflats on the S are supposed to be 38 all around according to the door.

Its definately a good lesson to remember. It's funny, even though I have had plenty of low pressure situations over the years I probably still do not check it quite as often as I should - I partially chalk it up to stations having poorly located and/or inoperable air refill equipment; it seems like the air pumps don't even work half the time

As for the runflats helping or not, IMHO I found the fact that they disguised the pressure more then regular tires a downside. With normal tires I can often visually tell when they are lowish, and it seemed easier to feel the difference as well. On a reg tire you never could have gotten to 0 pressure without noticing well before then But in any case, it doesnt matter if you check them a lot I guess

Be very careful with the Door Plate pressures.

Good point

After reviewing the manual, the recommended pressure for 2 or less is 33 and for 4 and luggage - 38. The door is reflecting the max load situation and I am always at the lesser level so I have readjusted to 33.

Off to the twisties!

I agree the runflats can disguise the problem, but if I had regular tires I may have been sitting by the side of the road waiting for the tow truck. Slow leaks, however, do give you a visual warning.

I got fooled by the runflats as well ....just the old habit of the visual check until one day I realized it doesn't work with runflats (silly me!). My tires were around 20 psi (shame on me), quickly corrected to 33.
Now I do a weekly check.
