No 93 octane in AZ?!? Tell me it ain't so.

I'm from back east where even 94 & 100 octane are easy to find. Is there any place in Az that has 93?

I just moved from Phoenix in February, and the commonly available "premium" is only 91.

UNOCAL on 56th Street and Bell (southeast corner) has pay-at-the-pump 100. They also have higher octane leaded out of a barrel if the shop is open.

Mobil at Chandler Boulevard about 48th street that has Trick 101 at the pump.

There is a place in down town Glendale called Kings Balancing. This place has racing fuel from 100-110 octane. It's not VP though - it's 76. Price starts at about $3.75/gal.

Been awhile since I verified this as I dont have the Jet Ski that I used to run this in the most... but those are places to check.

Generally, how much is gas costing right now in Arizona? It's getting close to $3.00 here in So. California.

How lucky can you all be by having 94 to 100 octanes Gas available in AZ but us in Cal only can get 91 octanehttps://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ies/NAMcry.gif

Average price in Phoenix for 87 is about $2.35 with 91 being the highest standard octane you'll find here for $2.65 or so. It's actually dropped a couple pennies in the last week here as we were pushing $2.40 for low octane.

At higher altitudes, gas is less likely to "pre-ignite" so a lower octane fue may be used. It is not surprising that 91 would be the highest octane available in Arizona, as it would be at least equivalent to 93 octane at sea level on the coasts. As has been stated in many other threads, there is no advantage to using a higher than recommended octane. 100 octane fuel is not "more powerful" than 87 octane fuel, in fact it is harder to burn and has less btu's. Use the fuel that is recommended for your vehicle.

Octane Paranoia

There is an interesting post from a Canadian Mini owner who tested tanksfull of 87 thru 93 for mpgs and performance. He found that 91 turned out to be optimal.

Californians without 93 and other interested parties shoug goto

and check out messages #2063 thru 2065.

That's my point there is nothing higher then 91 in Az except for the rare 100.

Personally from driving my car with both 91-100 octance as varies time I have noticed a difference. My car ran much better on 93 then on anything else, tho on 100 is was very smooth. The 91 out here is killing my car, It will radomly start shaking when in idle for too long, but it never did back home when I used 93. As a comparison tho, there where time I used 91 back home and it did it then too. I think my car is just a gas snob.

No problems with 91 octane here (but elevation is >3000 ft). Can't buy 93 or higher in Alberta (that I know of).

My car would always shake when idle in Phoenix, where all I could get was 91 ...

In Chicago we have 93, and I haven't noticed it doing that since I started filling up with that

driverphil May 10, 2005 10:12 AM

91 works fine for us in Tucson.

dansmini May 11, 2005 03:08 PM

Here it is tough to find 91. Everyone has 93!

azminiman May 11, 2005 05:23 PM

I have been using AZ 91 oct for over 3 years now in my minis...never had a gas related issue... ( I use chevron ONLY ).

I guess though there alway is a trade off... 91 oct and nicer roads for jug handles, no left turns, and RUST!
