04 MINI Cooper S vs. 80's 5.4 litre Mustang
Well, who do you think would win? I would have geussed a 5.4 litre Stroker. NOPE!
Today as I was coming home my usual way and some LOUD mustang with the reverse style hoodscoop, racing tach/shift light, and god knows what else pulled up next to me. He glances at me while at a stop sign, thinking nothing of the little toy next to him. He goes, his tires sqeek, so I think he wants to have a nice spirited drive, so I gun it and race past him. Well at that stop sign he didnt know "what was up" so I easily passed him. 1/2 mile later, another stop sign. This time he looks straight at me and revs (all I am thinking is "I am a gonner", this thing sounded MEAN!). So we proceed to have a full on spirited drive. First gear, I am right behind him(1/4 car length) and all of the sudden I start gaining! He shifts, his car screams like nothing I have ever heard and I am still at 6500rpm, I shift and he surges forward like a rocket, but I stay ahead. Same thing in 2nd gear, I stay ahead and gain even more as he needs to shift. Finally at 5000rpms in 3rd I decide to let off. We slow and he pulles up next to me looking dumb founded. He shouts "Is that stock?", all I tell him about is 15% pulley. All he could muster after that was, "damb that little thing is quick!". I wave and we turn opposite ways. Who would have geussed these little things are quick:wink:! |
HAHAHA
Cool story. 1 - 2 combination right in teh mouf. |
I always thought those were fast, but I just checked some reviews and stock they run about a high 14. *shrug*
Thanks for the story  |
I believe it
Older. stock mustangs 5.0s have a lot of low end torque but they run out of gas around 5k. I had a slight encounter with one today. There was an early 90's 5.0 at an intersection. The driver had his mustang pointed partially in my lane where we had a sharp left. I pulled quickly off of idle when the light turns green to go around him and I noticed he floors it. I floored it as well but I let off slightly because I feel the tires slipping and the 5.0 pulls one fender ahead. Once I got into my powerband I was able to reel in the one fender lead back and we were even to about 30 or so and then we both coasted after that.

Driver was an idiot....
If it was a 5.4 litre mustang from the 80s, it wasn't stock, so either the build sucked or the driver did. The stock EFI started at around 7 sec 0-60 and has gotten lower ever since! If it had a carb, the 5.4 with a decent build is a 325+ HP motor.
I drive a 65 with a 92 EFI, that has now been boosted to 92 Cobra specs, and off the line the mini would see nothing but taillights and exhaust. On a road course, I'm not sure yet, as I've only tracked the mini. Matt |

The 351 or 5.7 were never built although they people did some conversions. But the engine was too heavy and made the nose heavy car that much worse. I remember they used to sell 331 ci motors. Those were the perfect compromise. One of my friends still has a fox bodied mustang and has dyno'd 450 whp under boost. I think he's in the low 12's and with a good driver somewhere in the 11's. He's got a Tremec transmission that handles all of the power. I believe he had a world class t-5 before but I don't remember why he changed it. He had a 1999 VIper GTS and he said the Mustang is stronger. Anyway, a good set of flowmasters on a mustang will make any competitor take notice. |
I'm by no means a Mustang fan, but in my May FHM, they have some spec info on older rides...Shelbys.
1967 GT 500 / 355 HP / 0 - 60 in 7.2 seconds 1965 R Model / 360 HP / 0 - 60 in 5.2 seconds Anyways...some tidbits of info for ya, Mustang shmustang. |

I had a 1990 LX 5.0L AOD, FlowMaster exhaust, GT-40 Intake, bigger injectors,75mm throttle body, cam, Hi Flow fuel pump, plugs, wires,SVO Hi-Po Coil, ported and polished, 4.30 gears. Paxton supercharger was going to be the last mod, but I sold it before that. It would turn 13.6 @ 104 on street tires. About 280wrhp. Steve |
nice job buddy!! and the best part is most just don't get power to wieght....I did it to a few older shtangs my self...I have seen a friend of mine smoke vets and other so called "FAST cars" and it's HIGH larious...:lol:
most still think cause it's small it can't go fast...(head shaking) |

I have to say that i have never raced a mustang 0-60 on my mini... since i drive mostly in the expressway...
but i will tell you this... i have raced mustangs rolling anywhere from 30 to 80 mph. i would say i raced about 6 and i kill 5 of them, mustangs got Hpower but the gearing on the tranny sucks, rolling they arent very strong... i most say the one that i lost too was a yellow 2003 cobra with the SC and a pulley... so according to the guys it was doing about 470 hp to the crank... if my mini takes that... then i need to wake up b/c im dreaming... nice kill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carlos |
I could tell the gearing DID SUCK on this thing. We would be pretty much even(him pulling slightly) and he would have to shift and drop back 1/2 a car length. But man, it sure was aparent that thing had an a$$ load of torque. As soon as he would get into the next gear, ZOOOOOOM:eek2::eek2:, like a rocket! I geuss the longer gearing does help some for the MINIs.
It definetly was not stock though... There was obviously and exaust system anlong with other toys. It said 5.4 where the 5.0 would be and below it in blue "stroker". |

You are correct, sir!

I wish I knew how to drive my mini better. I pulled up to a guy with a 50 gallon cowboy hat in a "mini could fit under" jacked up ford f250 dulley and flew past him. Well we got up to the redlight and he was behind me and quickly pulled up next to me and looked down at me and started revving his engine and powerbraking it a little. I didn't notice what he was doing till right before the light turned green and as soon as i looked back up it was green and he was peeling out with all 4 back wheels. I steped on it and my wheels chirped and I stalled.(the asc/dsc WAS off) Yes smoked by a FORD f250 that the Mini would have easly showed who was boss:roll: After 5000 miles I still havn't found the best/easiest way to launch the Mini from a dead stop without either smoking the tires or stalling.
|
I rev to about 3500rpms and let the clutch out just enough to get the car going, and slowly let it out from there while giving it gas. So in other words, slip the clutch! If you try and "launch" you'll probably shift the weight so much your wheels have even less traction they allready have.
The only way to do it is practice though... but practicing and autox combined make 8k on the runflats before getting eagle f1s:lol:. |
