R50/53 MINI FINI cup holder...squeaking to sliding.
MINI FINI cup holder...squeaking to sliding.
What gives with the new MINI FINI cup holder (the one that goes on the upper side next to the radio and glove box)
The first time I saw the MINI I thought it had too many cup holders and I wanted the MINI FINI that came with mine removed until I realized it was the only reasonable place for my coffee thermos.
Well for awhile it would squeak and whine over every bump, it drove me nuts, now I told the dealership about it and they "lubed" it. Today it won't stay in place my coffee was in the MINI FINI and it slid over towards the glove box on a turn and my coffee almost landed in my daughters lap, what gives??
Anyone have this problem or know if it is possible to tighten it? my nearest dealership is 100 miles away. HELP!

I removed mine all together due to the sqeaks and rattles. It drove me absolutely CRAZY! I have just learned to drive without drinking. If I must, I just reach and put the drink in the rear cup holder. I also like the dash better without the the cupholder as it clearly looks like and after thought.
Yes my SA is from England and he says on the Autoban you would be insane to be driving and sipping anything!
Anyway I too hate the way it looks but love the conveinence, I am thinking of '86'ing it, is there a hole where you removed it?

new cup holder
I purchased one of this new cup holders for my 03 mcs, it does make a lot of noise but it also goes quiet after driving for 5 to 10 minutes. I'm thinking I should add some double sided tape to to the back of it where it makes contact with the pillars, I'll let you know my results later.
I guess I need to know if your MINI FINI is the '04 one that clamps around the passenger side console "tube". If so, this was easily removed as it is just one screw where the clamping occurs. It left NO mark on the tube to pleasant surprise.
If you have the MINI FINI for '05, my buddy who bought an '05, also removed his new style MINI FINI cupholder that sits up higher on the dash. If you drop the glove box door, you'll find the 2 screws holding the cupholder to the top of the tube. Simply remove the screws, the cupholder comes off, and then replace the screws.
Funny thing is, he gave his new style MINI FINI thinking I would want it. I haven't told him I don't want my old one in the car let alone the new one. Anyway good luck and "Lets Motor rattle-free!"

Spurvis,
I have an '05 Cabrio, thanks for the tips on removing it and I look forward to "rattle free" topless motoring!
Thanks again for you help.

I had my MA remove the cupholder from my '05 upon delivery as I feel the dash looks so much better without it. I was surprised to find out it retails for $50!!!! My husband is going to try to hook it up somewhere in his car.
