R50/53 CVT mystery solved!
Got home yesterday to find a letter from MINI waiting for me. They have discovered that some of the CVTs have been filled at the factory with incorrect, low-viscosity transmission fluid and this is causing some of the CVTs to fail. They want me to take mine to the dealer to have the fluid drained and replaced. . . I believe they said it would take three hours. I'm hoping this doesn't affect me since I just had my transmission replaced after Thanksgiving. . . I'll call my service guy this morning.

If your transmission was recently replaced, probably the recall letter no longer applies to the new tranny replacement. The recall was meant for your "old" transmission unit.
No need to have this job done twice.
