Water ingestion.
290k km, the only part of my car that hasn't been renewed yet so, since the rest of the engine bay was absolutely dry probably just in need of a new engine block - it was about time anyway.
Any tips/tricks about how to handle this in the best way?
edit: I'm still in such a shock that I posted in 1st gear instead of first GEN (R50)... may a mod please move this thread there or in the most appropriate section?

YIKES! That must have made some noise when it happened.
When mine eventually needs a rebuild, I am going all out. Will probably keep the stock pistons, but do forged rods. New head - probably not too aggressive, but ported and polished. When the engine comes out, the engine bay bill be prepped and painted.
I know this sucks, but look at it as an opportunity.

OOF
What happened?
Voting for: buy an R53 and make the R50 the new 'side project' until you find a replacement motor. Or, you know, just part it out...

I 100% agree, taking this as an opportunity to get in a fresher block. 290k km with some track use is anyway a quite worn out engine.
What happened: car was parked in gf's garden, HUGE rainstorm, water lever was rising as the garden was getting flooded, it was 4 inches below doors.
I started moving it and (dumb me, but it's easy to judge afterwards) decided that instead of the higher part of the garden it was better to take it to the main road on an elevated point. I drove on the very narrow private road with 6 inches of water to go outside and all of a sudden the 6 inches became like 30 because a short portion of the underwater road (2 yards, not even) was collapsed. Took a little nose-dive, enough for water to get in the engine. I was incredulous, when I opened the door the water level wasn't even at the door sill, was like 4 inches below.
I'm not parting it out, I bought a dirt cheap FIAT Punto (I'm in Italy) that has a ridiculously low TCO and will be driving it as my daily driver, the MINI will be fixed and put into "cold storage" in a friend's warehouse to slowly become a historical car and I'll be getting a Lotus as a second car in spring.
