R50/53 Canadian 1st Gen S
Canadian 1st Gen S
I recently purchased a 2005 MCS. I had been trying to look up the VIN through the MINI website to see if any recalls had been missed but I kept getting an error that the VIN couldn't be found. Even doing a normal search of the VIN on Google only came up with some auction house a few years ago. I ran a Carfax on the VIN and they reported that from 2005 through about 2014 the car was actually owned by someone in Canada. I wrote to MINI and they confirmed that the vehicle was originally purchased in Canada, which is why the U.S. MINI site can't find the VIN.
While the speedometer is properly American (as it apparently has to be when importing), the other gauges (I have the chrono pack option) are all in metric (Celsius temps, gas gauge goes from 0 to 1 instead of E to F, Oil Pressure is in BARs instead of PSI). Mechanically the car is fine outside of any normal wear and tear issues you'd normally see with a 15 year old car. Per Carfax, when it was imported, the MINI dealer actually did a fairly complete inspection and maintenance session on it.
I've never seen this before in any other car I've owned. Has anyone else?

Mostly we get cars coming from the US to Canada due to being rust free or more selection. There have been times when used prices and currency fluctuations make importing from CAN to US a good deal. More likely it was someone relocating from Canada and wanted to bring the car.
There is a process for importing cars with requirements for retrofitting the speedo and various inspections and whatnot, also fees of course.
Should be fine. There is nothing significantly different.
FYI
Most gas gauges in Canada have the normal E and F. Mini is weird on this one.
The metric conversion of PSI is kPa, Bar is number of atmosphere not sure if that would be Imperial or Metric or neither.
PS
You may get some issues with recall work. For example the passenger seat airbag sensor. That is a free recall in Canada with no expiration, but your may find that a US dealer won't do it on a Canadian car. You could drive to up here and get it done.

1 bar is exactly 100 kPa, so it at least plays nice with SI.
