Coolant pouring out of overflow cap

Is it possible to crossthread that cap? I know that there is an aftermarket reservoir, but is the cap available locally? There is no split on the reservoir and I am likely selling the vehicle soon so don't want to put any money into it.

Thanks.

The cap may be bad, or the plastic tank could be split and a worse case would be a bad head gasket. If the coolant dropped too low for any reason, the system is a pain in the but to bleed off the air and it will continue to get hot until it is burped properly. No way to know from here.

It is possible to cross thread the cap, but more than likely it has gone bad. Most all of the original coolant tanks have split by now. Especially, if the pressure has risen often lately.

Thanks, so no overheating here. I recently did a complete drain and fill when I replaced the radiator. I bled it a while ago. I opened the cap for some other reason and it has been crap since.

Can I get something like a Stant cap locally just to get me by?

I really have no idea, if you are using the factory set up, or some aftermarket coolant tank, without the factory cap. If it is factory, world auto parts, car quest auto parts and many others can get a replacement cap.
Make sure you really have the system bled, or you will have this happen, until you get it bled all the way.

I was way overfilling it like a moron! I didn't notice the max/min levels. I guess this happens when you have seen tons and tons of cars.

Caps are not expensive. Try eBay, Amazon, RockAuto or Partsgeek.

I went to my local autozone and they had a Duralast version of the Stant. It did not fit to my dismay.

I was way overfilling it.

When I had the oem coolant tank, I always kept the coolant level just above the baffles and never had a problem.. I changed that tank for a metal one using the OEM cap.. I keep the coolant level now at just above the center pipe and all is well. New caps cost about ten dollars and I keep a spare in the MINI just in case. Good luck.
