Glovebox Issues/Question
 

My06 decided to give me grief with the glove box. I closed it one day and it decided not to open. I used the coat hanger trick and opened it and discovered that the latch was not working. Pulled the box lid and tore it open to discover faulty latch. Cannot seem to get it to cooperate. There was an extra piece in there that I cannot seem to figure out how it goes or works. Not sure if I'll ever make it work. I'll shoot some pics and maybe someone can show me what the heck I'm doing wrong. I've looked at a few different threads with the glove box issue but I cannot seem to figure this out. It's not an issue with JB weld, I have that-no problem. It's the extra clip and how it works... Maybe I'm just being stupid...

Tried to simply buy a new lid but $80 for a freakin' glove box lid??WTF?!

Is there a resource where I can simply replace the glove box lid with a little package tray (AND not spend a ton of cash?) I swear I've seen then before but cannot find where to buy one. Keep finding one in UK but it's for the RH drive cars.

Thoughts?

I agree. These new parts ain't cheap.

I've also been checking the yards but it's about impossible to find in this area. I've recently moved to this area and been to 3-4 yards. All sucked! They were horrible. Still hunting though. Just figured I'd see if anyone had some ideas...

Hmm pics, posted above the text... Oh well, as you can see in the final pic, it appears that this is put together correctly. However, when I mock it up in the glove box shells it does not appear as if it will work. If you pull the handle, there is nothing that connects it to the latch, therefore the latch doesn't move. Hence inoperable. There were no other parts inside when I pulled it apart yet it feels like something is missing.

Any ideas?

Thank you for the pictures. I see how this is supposed to fit now. This piece also allows the handle's locking mechanism to work. Following is a link to a video on how somebody else resolved the problem if you don't need your glove box to be locked.



And if you want to be able to open it without using a coat hanger and not have to fix the glove box, here's the secret method. I have fairly long skinny fingers so it worked for me very easily. :)

Thanks for the info! I think I have seen that piece floating around. I need to check and see if I saved it. I have a feeling I saw it and saved it as it appeared from nowhere...

Nice resource. Their site doesn't have any glove boxes for my model year. I'll try and give them a call.

Found the part! Just need to glue all the broken bits and see if I can get this to work again.

These damned things are made to fail and they are so overpriced for new, you best bet and least grief is to buy a good one from a wrecker! Thankfully to the many in the wrecking yards, due to the crap CVT transmission, there are many available!

I agree! Trust me, I've been looking. Surprisingly, this item appears to be on everyone's radar as ever single one I've found for sale is $80 or $60 plus $20 for shipping or even worse, at all of the local yards I've gone through, the Mini's are cordoned off and kept in a special VIP lot that costs more just to walk in with no guarantee that what you need is there!

It's pretty pitiful.. I'e been thinking of doing away with the box altogether but the euro shelf alternative is even more expensive!! $100+ (At least there's nothing to break on it)

Those things crack all the time, mine is broken. Yep the euro parcel used to be a lot less from MINI, then they saw we were selling them and jacked the price. :(

I have one for my car next. Check the local junkyard or get a euro parcel and then you don't have to worry about it next time.

Any "heat wave" sales coming up?? I've been wanting the euro parcel in order to eliminate the glove box altogether but it's a little steep.
