Looking at 2004 R50

I’m looking at a 2004 R50 that only has 27,000 miles. It’s a single owner and has been garaged since day 1. It was bought by an 80 yr old grandmother who only drove it for a few years. Her daughter would take it out every week or so to keep it moving.

Anything out of the ordinary that I should look for?

Also so interested in any opinions on whether it’s worth going forward with. I used to have a 2009 Clubman JCW, that developed a few issues that I didn’t want to pay for so I’m looking for another Mini.

Thanks, Ed

You didn't say if it was a stick or auto. If it's a CVT auto, run (don't walk) away.

Not a reliable transmission and expensive to replace.
2004 manual before 7/2004 has the Midlands 5-speed
which is not terribly reliable either but much better than
the CVT auto, and cheaper to fix or replace.
The post 7/2004 R50 with the 5-speed Getrag is much more
reliable regarding the transmission.
if the build date is in July 2004, better check and confirm
whether it’s pre or post facelift as the latter will have the
better transmission.

Do you mean that Post-facelift the automatic CVT is better than before, or that the manual transmission is better after the facelift?

Thanks,

The manual changed from Midlands to Getrag with the facelift.
The auto CVT is the same either way.

Thanks for the replies,
I think I'll pass on this one, even if it is my mother-in-laws car

If the car is in good shape and you're getting it for a good price, change the transmission fluid and drive it. I think these transmissions aren't that bad as long as you don't beat on them and change the fluid regularly.

Yeah, that’s not a bad idea, just not sure I want to gamble...
and it’ll be awkward to low ball my mother-in-law
