won't go over 2000 rpm

Hi All: I have 2006 r53 cooper s.

I have been dealing with a chronic rattle above 2000 rpm previously.

Today while driving could not get car over 2000 rpm in all gears. eml light went on.

While in idle engine does rev easily above 2000 rpm. eml light is still on and rattle is still there.

Any hints on what is happening.

Thanks, Mike

Check the crankshaft pulley as it may be coming apart.

Couple of questions and/or suggestions; 1.) How many miles on the car? 2.) You first owner? 3.) There should be fault codes, whereas the R56 can be read by yourself, pretty sure the R53 needs to have access to the ECU port under the steering wheel. Most auto part stores will read the codes for you. 4.) There are allot of Minis that vibrate at 2,000 RPM, I have one, what/where is the vibration/rattle? Is your mirror shaking? 5.) If the rattle is not coming from the belt area, you may have issues with O2 sensor, throttle body etc.

I'm thinking he's prolly got like a rock in a can sound rattle, not a vibration. Something is major wrong that won't let his car go over 2k rpm.

I had similar situation a few years ago with a 2007 MCS. Managed to crawl to dealership, got a loaner and two days later shelled out $750 for a new "throttle box" (whatever that is).

mine did this, but the rattle started on the same day it would not go over 2000 rpm

it was the crankshaft pulley, on a 05/06 you wont see the pulley damage from the outside it's hidden by the damper face. I was able to confirm with a prybar against the dampers pulley groves, it moved around. Once I remove the damper the failure was obvious from the inside
