Maybe a little cautious about using a jack point that isn't exactly/officially identified as one. I use the 2 X 4 method very successfully. The best demo is on Blimey Cabrio's blog. Scroll down to the entry "How a stud lifts a MINI". http://www.blimeycabrio.com/2007/04/

I use that one as well - mainly because I have the aero kit and the skirts prevent jacking anywhere along the edge (otherwise I'd use the Blimey 2 X 4 method). I use a piece of wood to spread the load along that flat portion.

I have seen that method, but this is the best write up. I just wonder how much weight is actually being distributed by the 2x4 in this example...
Yup, either actually works fine for no longer than the car will actually be on the Jack itself while you transfer in the stands.
Another thing I like to do if I'm doing all 4 is pick the 2 wheels away from your working points (if you can) and simply set those on ramps instead of stands, just makes things a little more stable if the whole car is off the ground. Or if it needs to be higher than that, still place the ramps under the wheels or hubs for safety.
I've jacked mine from that point, but experience similar deformation, so now I use the 2x4 method. Modmini has a great video of it on YouTube if you want to see it done first.
