R53 JCW vs R56 JCW in a straight line?

Hi everyone,

i have been searching for the answer of this, but i haven't found my answer yet.

Cooper R53 JCW (210hp) vs Cooper R56 JCW (211hp)

I've come across alot of 'theories' about which one is faster and most people say the R56 will be, because it has more torque.
I can't agree 100% since the R53 has it's torque higher up, so better use of it during a drag.

I'm not after the whole physics story of torque*rpm/5252 blabla, since the real world is always different...

So my question to you guys, which one is faster in a straight line (any first hand experience?)
And how big is the difference?

I would love to know!

The r56 is the faster car, they usually don't make new models slower.

I had a lightly modded JCW R53 when I met up with a guy that had a stock FJCW R56 , I drove his car and he drove my car . I spanked him every time we took off. But I think, he never revved my car out as much as he should, as he was driving it more like his turbo car. But overall the turbo car spanked the R53.

Okay, i'm wondering, since the 0-100 times and 1/4 mile don't seem to differ a lot (from what i've seen on the web), i quess it's pretty much down to the driver as well..

We were doing slow speed roll ons, so traction wasn't as much an issue.Dead stop runs the cars would be matched more closely IMHO.

Yes, i can imagine.. always had the same problem with my Volvo diesel, it never worked to pull away fast and clean at the traffic light, since it was spinning all over the place..
The R56 (especially tuned) should require the same "soft foot" while leaving from standstill.

Stock for stock the R56 is going to have a better low end, but the R53 should over take on the top end. R56 power falls of around 5900 RPM, R53 will pull all the way to redline.

I have done his race and I have owned both cars. The R56 will win every time. The torque puts the car way in front.

Okay, well today i raced a kitted R56 (N18 engine with JCW kit = 200hp) and since i have the R53 JCW (210hp with GP intercooler, stock tune), i was wondering who would be faster...

We did 2 runs, one from low speed (40 km/h) and one from a bit higher (80 km/h) and my car was quite a bit faster than his.
I expected his torque to have the advantage initially, but as soon as my rpm's got higher, i started to pull away harder than he did.

A JCW 211 would probably be a bit different, but i think we'd match quite nice in terms of acceleration.

From credible sources, whatever that means.

Every driver is different and every car is different, even the the same model and year, even more so as they get older.

Yes, i agree!
However my car is from 2006 (30k miles) and his is from 2010 (40k miles) so i don't expect a lot of engine 'wear' causing a bigger difference than usual.

I know mine is a genuine factory JCW with certificate, but his car has been retrofitted with the 200 kit.
You could ask yourself how that's been done?
He does have the intake, exhaust, badges and engine serial number, so i expect a full kit.

His JCW might be missing the larger turbo and more aggressive software.

I've read the larger turbo is part of the factory 211 car and not the 200 kit, is this true?

He told me it's the 200 kit with the appropriate software.
Obviously a remap would give him gains, but that would be the same for me..

from a dig, I think the r53 would have it, I don't think the JCW r56 has a limited slip? stock for stock, whereas the r56 has more potential within an easier access to be faster

I don't know wether he has a limited slip diff or not..
I know i have and it makes a lot of difference from standstill, it can be nailed almost perfectly everytime with minimal wheelspin!

And obviously a turbo'ed car has tons of potential, but i thought the character and sound of the supercharger was that tiny bit more important to me

I like both, rotary mufflers are really good sounding, but so is an unrestricted intake tract for a supercharger. I like the driving dynamics of an r53 over an r56. the r53 feels more connected to the driver. but after the first few mods, it becomes very pricy to upgrade, and now that the 3rd gen is out, the aftermarket is slowly dieing off for the 1st gen

I can only agree!

I'd love a supercharged 2.0 in a Cooper
(Would never happen though...)
