Clicks & ticks from behind dash at full throttle??

I know it sounds weird, but intermittently I will hear random ticking/ clicking sounds that seem to come from under / behind the driver's side of the dash. At first I thought it was only when I was under full throttle with the AC on, but lately I've been noticing it whenever I'm at full throttle / full boost. Has anyone else experienced this?

Rhythmic or random? Could just be movement of the various plastic dash pieces.

I was going to say when you have the auto air on the syncro on the climate control move and make noise. But that's when you have it on and not just under full throttle. Maybe junk in the cabin filter area, like nuts and debris moving around ?

Look at the both motor mounts...
As they fail, the engine moves around like a Muppet©®.....
You can hear the motor bumpping stuff..it places extra stress on the tenant/clutch...

Thanks for the replies!

ECS - I have recently replaced my cabin filter & the one I took out did not look too bad, a little debris here & there but nothing like the picture you posted.

Zippy - By "second mount", are you referring to the transmission mount?

And yes, the clicks & ticks are random, its almost as if I can hear pressure building or something as the engine revs up & the clicks / ticks only happen at the peak of the pressure build. I may try to get a video to post up since it's so hard to describe...

Welcome,

Great eliminates that. Check the lower engine mount, to see if its moving freely and the rubber is rotted or has separated.

Then the main engine upper mount, can the motor move easily when pushing by hand ?

Are you pre 12/2003 or post 12/2003 ?

The first thing that ran through my head was .. "Squirrel Cage Treadmill bearing coming apart..." but since I promised to not to be a smart-***... so

+1 on checking all your engine and transmission mounts, but also double check your Air Box depending on what you have you might have something in the lower pocket (the part under the black plastic grill work under the wiper blade) just double check it for debris and if you air box is open to it open up the air box and make sure you don't have anything in there or if you have the JCW style Air Box it could be the Performance Flap bouncing around if the actuator is bad.

Best of luck.

Motor on!

One of the most common parts to deteriorate on the MINI are the engine mounts. It's a good suggestion to check it out and see if it's your culprit. When you're mashing on the gas you're placing pressure on the mounts so if they're bad/loose it will allow things to shift and hit on other components. Maybe resulting in the clicking you hear. If you need a good tech article for their replacement you can check ours out here. Let us know what you find!

Changed "second" mounts to motor mounts....not sure what Android did with auto correct...I usually catch those.
The engine mounts are a weak point on these cars...both the passenger side one, and the transmission one...lots of engine movement happens, and these motors move around tons...so much so it can be a bit scary to see the motor move when a car is on a dyno.
Sometimes, you might hear it, or pick up a different feel....worth looking at.
