couple of odd things ive noticed

realized the other day, when i start my car the "maintenance" counter is blank  not zero, or negative, just, blank... strange.

also, when i get home from my drive now, and turn off the car, the radiator fan kicks on for a while. never really used to do this i dont think, it just seems to be doing it recently, past week or so.

this a normal operation? i think ive read about it, but cant recall.

think thats it for now, only other thing is i still have some slight steering wheel vibration at high speeds, 90+ or so.

car was aligned (but not after installing new LCA bushings) and wheels balanced (balance fixed 70 mph wheel shimmy). could this be related to my cracked steering column? (broken u joint deal that many others are dealing with). still waiting on that part to become available... :impatient:

ZippyNH 09-29-2014 08:22 AM

On the u-joint...
Check with Detroit tuned....
Mini has stated they WILL NOT MAKE MORE for US cars.....but there is a SB ON HOW TO MODIFY the English part made for the steering wheel on the other side....and DT has them...
And IT DOES NOT involve moving the steering wheel to the passenger seat..lol.
As for the fan...check you coolant level...when slightly low, or driven hard, the radiator fan can run a bit.

i will check with DT on that thing.

We have them here in stock. Its just rotating the steering wheel 7 teeth on the steering spindle. Get them while you can.

so mini is screwing us with their faulty part that cannot be replaced.
fabulous. guess ill have to get a damn used one... i will check with DT on that thing.

No...they are only making the part for English cars...so you must do a slight change to install a different part....mini still has parts...just reducing parts stocked/made...
As ecs shows, they are starting to show up, but not a straight install...

Correct zippy, as of right now, unless things change, there is just the the part above which we have in stock. Which gives you a solution for new. :)

I just ordered this part from your site ECS -- thanks for making these available. I had placed a backorder for the LHD part -- so I'll contact you guys about making sure thats cancelled out.

On the clocking it 7 clicks -- does anyone have a DIY (with pictures of some sort) -- kind of confused by this -- maybe I'll understand when I take the car apart..

Thank you.

well, back to the original thing that made me post my odd things ive noticed;

the cars fan still runs after i park, only seems to happen in the afternoon, and it even happened after / during rain... which was really odd to me, seems like the rain should have cooled stuff off enough to keep the fans from running.

someone said check coolant, i have not done this yet, but any other thoughts? why would the car be trying to cool itself after a drive home. the car is not overheating when i drive it, so, ya.

The fan issue...could be the low speed fan resistor? Mine started doing this earlier in the year: first time as I was waiting at a super-slow drive-thru window. Just sitting there listening to the radio and I heard a fan kick on, but thought nothing of it. Happened again a month or so later, again, just thought the car was cooling itself.

Then it happened twice after I shut the car off - the fan would run for maybe 3-5 minutes. Took it to my shop and that was his diagnosis: bad low-speed fan resistor. Had it fixed for a reasonable price. I think you can buy the part/assembly, but there's also a less expensive workaround. Google or searching here will probably find exactly the details you need.

Good luck!

possible... this was fixed by mini a few years ago, but i think we only get a couple of years out of those stupid low speed fans anyway right?

i may check directly with mini of orlando, a few guys there know tons of odd stuff about these cars. will report in with what they say.

i will also check coolant and the low speed fan, believe i should hear it come on at some point, with low ac or something right?

Get the car warmed up then let it sit idling. It will get up to 222° and start the fan.
