Upgrading 2002 Speedometer

I have the stock 2002 speedometer. I love it, but today I saw the "connected package" navigation system/sexy futuresque computer thing. I would like to know if there is any way to get that gorgeous piece of tech into my old Mini? Thanks!

If you're thinking of the nav system that came with these cars new, don't bother. It's a sexy not found type of a deal vs. any modren smart phone

in a 2002 ... it would be a VERY difficult thing to do

many options, buzzers and bells that came later were not on the 02 and the wiring isn't there

for example, brake wear sensors did not come until 03 .... trying to add them would be virtually impossible.

I had feared as much. It's a pity, but I suppose that the thing would look more than slightly absurd in my old ride. Maybe I'll just toss on a a spoiler and call it a day.:-)
Thanks, guys!

Since the miles is stored in 3 places...including the speedo...would be hard...
If you have NAV...the center console could be yanked...and a small tablet added to the opening...
A few Chinese (junk) parts sometimes show up that fit...would hate to try one on a daily... But for a weekend car...could be interesting.

What are my options for replacing the thing, then? Is my only available path one that involves me ripping the speedometer from the carcass of a junked Mini? Would I be able to utilize a newer one (for instance, one of those with the stereo unit built in), or would I need to ensure that the replacement is the same year as my vehicle? Thanks!

The newer unit is completely incompatible. The car electronics was completely updated in 2007 and again in 2011.

For your 2002 model, navigation was available but it is quite difficult to retrofit.

Also, we're talking about a vintage 2002 era Nav system. It's not worth doing.

Yup...
The gen1 GPS (many were CD...pre DVD maps...later years got a DVD disk for maps) are boat anchors....remeber electronics run 5 or 6 years behind handheld...so think mid 90's tech...ouch!!
Modern stuff is not compatible... If you need to ask, you are in above your head.
Some folks did rip out the nav screen when they failed...and added a fixed screen display from the back...an correctly sized handheld GPS or tablet has been done...all custom one off stuff.

P.S.
Changing the speedo with anything but A NEW unit will result in a vin/mile mismatch error....leaving the true miles as "unknown" if you ever sell the car...a major turnoff to many buyers...

Crackow 06-17-2014 06:56 PM

Well, all of that is rather discouraging. Is there any way to repair my current one without ruining my vehicle? The person from whom I got the car literally beat the thing. The top is cracked to hell, the clear plastic is nowhere to be found, and it is just an eyesore overall.

ZippyNH 06-17-2014 10:41 PM

You could transfer the guts to a used one...using the lens and the maybe even the more...at one point a few places sold antireflection lenses....you just opened up the factory unit...and inserted the new one....
Out motoring.com had the kits...not sure if they are still around the kits).

I saw your other post. By that description, I guess you need to replace the speedometer entirely. A new speedometer costs about $600. Considering your long repair list, you might want to simply buy and install a used speedometer from eBay. The odometer may stay at the value from the donor vehicle

If you're looking for a nav or vehicle display screen, you can add a tablet, or a small monitor. If you really want to tear into things, you could dig/gut the center console area.
