R50/53 Questions about replacing run-flats
Questions about replacing run-flats
If you have replaced your run-flats, what measures have you taken to ensure peace of mind?
Do you just trust that you will be in an area where you have cell phone service when you have a tire failure?
Do you carry a mobility kit (sealant and compressor)?
Do you carry a space-saver spare wheel?
Do you carry a full sized spare wheel?
If you carry a spare wheel, where did you get a cover for it?
Do you do something that I didn’t think of listing?
Thanks for you input,
-Nick

I took the runflat wheels off and sold them.
I have aftermarket rims and non runflats to drive around in.
I have a spare set of stock wheels with runflats but never use them.
Mobility kit-no
compact or full spare tire-no I have an MCS
Cover-no, jerseygirl makes her own covers.
I carry a cell phone to call AAA and have 100 miles towing covered as well as MINI roadside service.
I live on an island 40 miles wide.
No problems so far after 16 months.

Running W/O Run Flats
I drive with non run flats in the spring and summer months.
I have AAA and my cell phone.
Next week though I am participating in the MOT Event which will take me up to Bar Harbour and Mt. Washington. As safety precaution I just purchased two cans of Fix-A-Flat.
Hoepfully that will be enough coverage

Ick, dont use fix-a-flat goop. It makes a proper repair ,soon thereafter, a headache. Get a cheap, compact air-pump from Sears or wherever, plug kit, Autozone etc., and needlenose pliers (to remove screw/nail)&cut off excess plug material.

I replaced my stock RFs with Goodyear F1s, what a world of difference!
Best mod to my MCS so far (2nd best is uprated rear sway bar).
For city and local driving with good cell coverage I carry:
cell phone
compressor
patch kit (not sealant, but the awl with gooey thick thread)
for long distance driving, especially since I do mostly non-highway driving where cell coverage is very limited or non-existent, and sometimes traffic is very light at best, I carry a space saver spare I ordered from Classic MINI, that is beautifully wrapped in a bag made by Jerseygirl (aka The Bag Lady).
For such trips I wedge the space saver spare behind the passenger seat.

I'm still using my run flats on the street. I carry a plug kit and 12V compressor.
I have AAA and a cell phone, but you won't see standing on the highway, cell phone in hand waiting for somebody to come fix my tire.

I am running Yokohama AVS ES100 non run flats.
Sure hope I never have a flat.
I have a cell phone and a lot of hope.
and that's it.

Thanks for all the input!
Since I do most of my local driving on the twisties where there is very intermittent cell coverage and little traffic I think that I’ll go with the 12V air-pump and patch kit for local use. A bagged full sized spare for long distance driving sounds good to me - - better than risking some gas station minimum wage worker dinging one of my wheels.
You could have also mentioned that if you have nice legs and be a female, you could hike up your pant leg and show a little leg-skin to an oncoming motorist to aid you, or any other body parts.
That'll probably get that flat fixed in no time.
That sealant crap is nasty. Although it may work for a distance needed to arrive safe, cleaning out the tire is a job and a half. And it only works for a certain distance. It would be more adviseable to buy and carry along a mini compressor in the MINI. That way at least you can keep adding air if you happen to be stuck in an awkward location or need to camp out overnight, or whatever the case may be.
I only use my runflats for winter. Pretty softcore snowfall where I am. So there's no need for chains, winter/studded tires, etc.
Cheers,

I didn't get a superchanger with my MC that came with runflats, but I did get a spare tire. Fortunately when I change to non-runflats I won't have a problem.
I have used the flat-fix stuff many times through the years. It's gotten me off a hot busy Interstate HW and home in the middle of the night. I'd recommend taking a can or two along. Always told the tire repair folks I'd used the flat-fix, they just respond, "OK thanks" and fix my tire.

I ditched the runflats this past winter. I got a Cooper spare to carry with me on longer trips. Fix-a-Flat, a compressor, and a cell phone just wouldn't cut it for me. I travel through some areas with absolutely no cell coverage and in the past I've gotten flats that couldn't be fixed with a can of goop or a compressor. To me it's just more reassuring to have an actual spare with me when I'm venturing further from home.
I don't mind the small amount of lost space the spare costs me. If you're worried about boot space and don't have four passengers, the spare tucks neatly behind one of the front seats!

It looks like a cell phone, Fix-a-Flat, a compressor, and a Cooper spare are the way to go. Being that prepared should almost ensure that none of that stuff is ever needed!
3 questions about the Cooper space-saver spare:
What is the weight of the wheel and tire?
What is the diameter?
What is the price of the wheel and tire?
Thanks,
-Nick
